With the 2023 US Open now underway at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, many tourism-related locations are serving their own offerings. Here is a roundup of other events and activities happening near or around the time of the US Open.
Those walking toward the tennis center will see the famous Unisphere, a large stainless steel globe built for the 1964 World’s Fair; the park was the location for this event and another World’s Fair in 1939.
Flushing Meadows-Corona Park is also home to other venues to see before matches begin. Most are open while the US Open is in session; visit their websites for hours and admission pricing.
The Queens Museum is based at what was once the 1939 World’s Fair’s New York City building. Today, rhe museum is known for its signature piece, Panorama of the City of New York, a room-sized architectural model of the city commissioned for the 1964 World’s Fair by NYC urban planner Robert Moses. After the fair, this panorama stayed and reflects what New York City looked like prior to 1992.
Recently, the museum has added an interactive tool that visitors can use to explore a three-dimensional scan of the more than 850,000 miniature buildings that make up the Panorama. Additionally, the museum has two exhibitions underway now through September 10 — Aliza Nisenbaum’s "Queens, Lindo y Querido" and Tracey Rose’s "Shooting Down Babylon."
The Queens Botanical Garden originated as an exhibit at the 1939 World’s Fair, this public garden has grown to become a 39-acre splendor with an arboretum and curated gardens and groupings of trees.
The Queens Zoo’s Aviary building was originally a geometric dome that had functioned as Winston Churchill Pavilion during the 1964 World’s Fair. The 18-acre zoo has other exhibits, including one for domestic animals like goats, sheep, donkeys and cows; a Sea Lion Pool; a Waterfowl Marsh; and the Wild Side, a menagerie of species including Andean bears and Chacoan peccaries.
Ties to the US Open and tennis in general are also within parts of Manhattan.
Grand Central Terminal has its own connection to tennis. Its Vanderbilt Tennis Club schedules hourly court rentals, based upon days and times of booking, plus adult and junior programs. Also, the terminal’s The Campbell Bar is where visitors can try the Honey Deuce Cocktail, which is the US Open’s official drink. This vodka-based cocktail is made with lemonade and raspberry liqueur and topped with a honeydew melon wedge.
Other NYC properties serving the Honey Deuce Cocktail include Thompson Central Park hotel and The Parlour at InterContinental New York Barclay. This Midtown IHG property is also offering other tennis-inspired drinks including the

In late May, I flew with my daughter from California to Kennedy International Airport in New York, where I rented a car from Avis and headed to Connecticut for a three-day family visit. On day two, I parked the car in Waveny Park in New Canaan and when I returned, it was gone. The local police told me they had impounded the rental because Avis had reported it stolen to the New York Police Department. I had planned to spend the last day of my trip with my 80-something mother, whom I had not seen for three years because of the pandemic, but had to waste precious hours on hold with Avis’s customer service department. They eventually offered me a new car but I was unable to coordinate picking it up, so we ended up relying on my sisters to get around. I was only able to spend a few hours with my mom and had to take a $100 Uber back to the airport. I asked Avis not to charge me for the rental, but they did, $653, and when I disputed the charge with Capital One, Avis fought me. I can’t believe Avis is renting out cars they have reported stolen, and then charging its clients. Can you help?

There’s a lot to be excited about in the food world right now, with plenty of anticipated restaurant openings to keep track of. This fall, some of our favorite chefs are expanding to new cities, transitioning pop-ups into permanent spaces, and reviving the restaurants that their fans were sad to see go. In Chicago, a decorated chef will pay tribute to his roots at a new spot serving both traditional and reimagined Ukrainian dishes. And chef Sam Fore, the self-described “Sri Lankan snack queen,” will launch the long-awaited brick-and-mortar location of Tuk Tuk Snack Shop, her pop-up restaurant in Lexington, KY. The menu will highlight the commonalities between Sri Lankan cuisine and the flavors of the American South.
It’s never been more stressful to obtain or renew a passport. Officials are working through a deluge of passport applications, which began pouring in earlier this year and has caused major delays in processing times.
I have 24 credit cards right now, and it's getting hard to justify continuing to pay for the annual fees for all of them since the costs continue to skyrocket (ahem, The Platinum Card® from American Express).
