FAA Reauthorization Is Like a Game

I’m sure I have told this story before.
My father was old-school Italian. On top of that, he was a prison guard, or as they are better known today, a corrections officer. To say that he was strict is an understatement.
As the father of two boys, now 23 and 19, I understand that his strictness was all done out of love. You never stop worrying about them, no matter their age. But back when I was nine or 10 years old, it was a concept that was lost on me. I literally would sit on the couch for hours to try and work up the courage to ask him for permission to go outside and play or something. It took me years to realize that if I didn’t at least ask the answer was always going to be ‘no’ whether it was spoken or not.
That’s the position the Federal Aviation Administration finds itself in.
Ask for everything.
And hope for the best.
The reauthorization of FAA funds through December 31 was part of the agreement to keep the federal government rolling for three months. Oh joy, we get to go through this again!
Legislators are throwing around words like ‘temporary legislation.’ But why do we have to negotiate life or death? That’s just a piece of friendly advice for the next time. And there will be a next time.
As we have seen from the number of close calls on runways and in the air, this is not the time for negotiations. I understand that the government has to work within the parameters of a financial budget for its agencies, like the FAA. But we have all seen the evidence of staff shortages. It’s been like a domino effect that touches everything the FAA overseas.
So that’s why the FAA should ask for everything in three months. It’s a game, an unfortunate game. Three months is not enough time. Three months puts us into the height of the holiday season and we all saw what happened last year during the holidays.
Ask for everything. Aim high.
Ask to go outside and play for three hours, knowing that one hour is more likely. But maybe, just maybe, the other side will renegotiate and offer two hours. Then both sides will feel like they have won.
Yes, that sounds sophomoric and sounds like a kids’ game.
But that’s what this reauthorization has dissolved into and the decisions are being made by just a handful of people.
