Greece will offer a free hotel stay to travelers who were affected by last summer’s devastating fires on the island of Rhodes.
Travelers who stayed in a hotel that was evacuated during the wildfires in July 2023 can now apply for a free hotel stay for seven days, six nights, according to the Ministry of Tourism. Travelers must plan their stay at a participating hotel either from now through May 31 or from Oct. 1 to Nov. 15.
“The scheme is up and running as the prime minister promised,” the Greek tourism ministry’s general secretary, Myron Flouris, told the Guardian. “It’s been a very complicated process not least, I think, because we’re the first country in the world to do this.”
To take advantage, travelers must apply online and provide information on where they stayed during last year’s fires, the room type they booked, their reservation number, and the duration of their reservation. Eligible travelers will then receive a week-long stay “in a hotel of similar category (star rating) and room type to the one they stayed in during the fires.”
Travelers who were affected by the fires and take advantage of the program will receive different amounts of compensation in the form of an e-voucher based on the type of hotel and room:
The wildfires in Rhodes were sparked by an intense heatwave last summer that blanketed much of Europe. As a result, both residents and tourists were forced to evacuate as flames scorched the island, including damaging an inland nature reserve, according to The Associated Press.
Today, tourists who visit Rhodes will find the same gorgeous beaches, boating opportunities, and picturesque cobblestoned streets of the Jewish quarter that drew travelers to the largest of the Dodecanese islands in the first place.

Before joining TPG in 2021, I was a newbie to the world of points and miles. Despite traveling frequently throughout the previous decade, I was oblivious to the benefits of loyalty programs or how straightforward it could be to earn points or miles for airfare and hotel stays.
It’s inevitable: Every spring when we pull together the Hot List, our annual collection of the world’s best new hotels, restaurants, and cruise ships, a staffer remarks that this latest iteration has got to be the best one ever. After a year’s worth of traveling the globe—to stay the night at a converted farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove outside Marrakech, or sail aboard a beloved cruise line’s inaugural Antarctic voyage—it’s easy to see why we get attached. But this year’s Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. It’s certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchill’s office, but also the world’s largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali. We were surprised and inspired by this year’s honorees, and we know you will be too. These are the Hot List hotel winners for 2024.

One of the most incredible bird scenes in Europe took place as I hiked through the Bielawa nature reserve in northern Poland, about 40 miles north of Gdansk. I had left the village of Sławoszyno via a dirt track and was heading towards Kłanino, the open countryside and fields disappearing from my sight as the hedgerows grew taller either side of me. As I stepped forward, a gap appeared in the hedge and in front of my eyes a flock of nearly 100 cranes, which had been silent, took off across the field, honking with their red-tinged heads and faces, and feathery wing feathers flapping. I could almost touch them. The 19,000-hectare (47,000-acre) park is a mix of forest, wetland and coast. Rita
