When my partner and I booked a vacation on one of the world's largest cruise ships last year, we couldn't have been more excited — or clueless.
In December 2023, we flew from the UK to Barbados, where we embarked on a two-week cruise across the Caribbean on Arvia. The ship was launched in 2022 by the British cruise line P&O and has 19 decks, 30 bars and restaurants, and the capacity to host 5,200 guests.
Arvia is the largest ship built for the UK market, a P&O spokesperson previously told Business Insider. It's also one of the biggest cruise ships in the world, according to The Times of London.
The trip marked my partner's first time on a cruise ship. I had cruised once before, on a five-night voyage around northern Europe on Cunard's Queen Elizabeth ship in October 2021.
With the capacity to host just over 2,000 guests, the Queen Elizabeth is far smaller than Arvia. I soon realized that my previous cruise experience wasn't enough to prepare me for this trip, and I made some mistakes along the way.

I was one of the first guests to sail on Royal Caribbean's newest vessel: The $2 billion Icon of the Seas, the world's largest cruise ship.
Embarking on a yearlong journey around the world is a dream scenario for many travelers. However, the logistics of making it happen can be challenging, not least because of the sheer number of flights you would need to book. One way to make the journey a reality is by purchasing an around-the-world flight ticket.
On Tuesday, in a ceremony that, of course, involved a soccer ball, the Argentine soccer superstar Lionel Messi pressed a button and a bottle of champagne smashed against the bow of Icon of the Seas, christening the world’s largest cruise ship at its home port of Miami. Like an A-list celebrity stepping onto the red carpet, the arrival of Royal Caribbean’s 250,800-ton ship has captured the world’s attention, with some marveling over its cutting-edge features, like the largest water park at sea, while others criticize the gigantic ship’s potential to damage the environment.
Holland America is taking inspiration from the 1920s again for its latest over-the-top Mediterranean cruise.
From air traffic control strikes to extreme weather, last year saw millions of passengers face flight delays across Europe.
In 2022, I worked remotely and traveled across Europe, visiting friends and exploring some of the big cities I'd heard so much about.
