Summers in my hometown of Geneva, Switzerland used to bring sunny spells, but also long, rainy periods during which one wondered whether July had suddenly morphed into November. No longer. Climate change and its resulting heat waves have transformed the aquatic landscape, and more importantly the relationship between people and Lake Geneva (also known as Lake Léman). Along the quays, outdoor bars and cafes have sprung up, and on the water, sail boats, yachts, but also kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and even floating mattresses lend a new Mediterranean feel to this Alpine scenery.
Gathered around the Western tip of crescent-shaped Lake Geneva—the largest Alpine lake in Western Europe—the City has reinvented itself as a warm-climate international destination. Throughout the old town, cafés and restaurants stretch their outdoor terraces one after another along narrow, cobblestone streets; young banking executives on lunch breaks don short-sleeve shirts (once unthinkable in this once formal town), but nowhere is the change more obvious than along the Lake and the turbulent Rhône River. There, the City and the Canton of Geneva have rethought and rebuilt the shores, creating numerous access points to the water as beaches, floating docks, and piers. On a sweltering day recently, I hopped on a Welo taxi bike to see them for myself.
It seemed best to start in Cologny, often called “Billionaire Hill,” furthest away from the Geneva center. There is a new concrete jetty for easy gliding into the cool water, but it’s the stunning circular pontoon made of Swiss oak and designed by ADAO Architects that attracts sun worshippers. With a diameter of 131 feet, the ring is built on stilts but seems to float around its interior lagoon. Best to go early in the day, before the crowd descends.
Closer towards town near the new marina, a whole urban and aquatic concept was recently inaugurated recently after years of planning stalled by the pandemic. Besides the marina, it includes the Restaurant de la Plage built on a massive platform, and 1,300-foot-long beach—part sand, part gravel—that runs alongside a grassy promenade allowing for gentle water access. Somehow between the busy road and the beach, a man-made ecosystem in the shape of a laguna attracts waterfowl, songbirds, and fish—a perfect spot for families.
From there to the other side of the lake, I was glad to let the taxi bike driver weave our way through traffic on the Pont du Mont Blanc as we headed to the iconic Bain des Paquis. Saved from destruction in the 1980s but created in 1872, this busy jetty has become a whole world unto itself and includes a pebble beach, a diving tower, massage parlor and a slew of cultural activities. The casual bistro offers the best

The gateway to Switzerland’s Bernese Alps, Thun is as quintessentially Swiss as you can get. Lake Thun is bookended by its namesake town to the west and the adventure sports hub of Interlaken to the east, and has long provided an escape into nature for Swiss travellers in the know. However, the region has remained somewhat under the radar to holidaymakers from further afield. The result is a series of quiet, trail-woven vineyards, castle-sprinkled shores, myth-laden caves and never-ending mountain views — all perfect for a short summer or autumn break.
