Palm Beach features many of the world’s usual luxury tourism bullet points: 5-star resorts, golf courses, fine dining with oceanfront views. While spectacular, these amenities are hardly unique to the 47 miles of coastline north of Miami.

Palm Springs is a beautiful, relaxed city nestled in the California desert, about 110 miles east of Los Angeles.
The gateway to the Coachella Valley, Palm Springs has been a haven for celebrities and the rest of us for nearly a century. The area is popular among retirees and ‘snowbirds’ from Canada who come to enjoy the warm winter months. The city abuts the San Jacinto range, and its low buildings offer a panoramic view of desert, sky and mountains.
The area became a playground for movie stars in the 1920's, with Joshua trees reported set afire to mark the way to desert parties. Built in 1933, the La Serena Villas hotel is technically older than Palm Springs itself, established in 1938. La Serena, part of the Kirkwood Collection of luxury boutique hotels in California, has a classic feel. It was redeveloped as a luxury hotel in 2016 by architect May Sun, with furniture and finishes chosen by an interior design group.
The cozy 18-villa hotel is at 339 S Belardo Rd, only a block away from downtown’s main drag, Palm Canyon Drive. But it’s on a much quieter street, with the lobby, restaurant and villas set back from traffic.
Entering the hotel, you walk into a white sitting room ‘lobby.’ There’s a cozy fireplace and chairs on the left, with the front desk on the right. A sign on the front desk reads “Be kind or leave.” The friendly staff, however, showed no signs of expelling contented guests.
The lobby opens to the big blue rectangular pool, surrounded by umbrellas and lounge chairs. Sunbathing by the pool (heated to 80 degrees), is popular even in December and January, when daytimes temperature hit 70 degrees. In August, temperature can reach 120. An outdoor spa and jacuzzi are nearby.
Designed in a low-slung Spanish style, La Serena Villas is a classic boutique Palm Springs hotel. With over an acre of landscaped grounds, it provides the relaxed privacy that travelers from big cities crave. Yet the outdoor and indoor pleasures this civilized desert community has to offer are just minutes away.
Returning to your villa continues the relaxation. Our villa had a clawfoot tub with a tray for reading and snacking. Further intimations towards intimacy are supplied by a four-poster bed, as well as a big walk-in shower. Don’t bring the kids; the hotel has a 21 and over policy.
The privacy theme continues with the outdoor private patio. Each has an easy-to-use firepit surrounded by outdoor seating, perfect for cold desert evenings. Before one goes to bed, put your breakfast requests on a card outside the door. Our continental breakfast (coffee, oranges, and blueberry muffins) arrived in a handsome wicker basket.
Behind the pool is the resort’s restaurant, Azucar. USA Today called it one of the ten best

There’s something very satisfying about a hotel—or any enterprise, really—that settles on one thing and decides to do that thing very well. The First Roma, a new collection (or triptych, in the words of a marketer) from the Hong Kong–based quiet-luxury Pavilions Hotels & Resorts brand (known for low-key five-star properties like the Pavilions Bali), seems to have taken that idea to heart.

Sun Valley, Idaho is practically synonymous with skiing and winter snow sports—and for good reason. Interest in skiing surged in the decades after the first Winter Olympics in 1924. Sun Valley Resort opened in 1936 with the goal of becoming America’s premier ski resort—debuting the world’s first chairlift, adapted from a system used to haul bananas onto ships in Panama.

Yet there’s something special about visiting in the winter around the holiday season, when the hot temperatures cool and getting outdoors to see the beautiful landscape is all the more enjoyable for it.
