The Adirondacks is often known for its scenic beauty, enticing many visitors to this New York State region. The area has also been the subject of paintings, sculptures and other mediums, so much that a museum recently unveiled a new exhibit on its artistic inspiration.
The Adirondack Experience, a museum also referred to as ADKX, opened “Artists & Inspiration in the Wild,” a permanent exhibition, in July 2023.
Consisting of four main galleries, “Artists & Inspiration in the Wild” illustrates how four natural features of the Adirondacks–light, forests, water and mountains–spark the creative visions of diverse painters, sculptors, expert artisans and even today’s content creators. Each gallery has a specific color scheme and an Ambient Soundscapes track of matching natural sounds.
At its entrance, an Intro Gallery tells of those who came to inhabit or visit the Adirondacks. This space honors Indigenous peoples and artists who settled here and created pieces.
Adirondack art is prominent throughout the exhibition, with a cross-section of over 200 pieces ranging from plein air paintings and rustic furniture to basket weaving and photography. The list of featured artists extends to Thomas Cole, Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, Seneca Ray Stoddard, Rockwell Kent, Edna West Teall, Margaret Bourke-White, Takeyce Walter, Niio Perkins, and Natasha Smoke Santiago.
Over five years in the making, “Artists & Inspiration in the Wild” is part of the Adirondack Experience’s master exhibition plan for updating their entire campus.
“We have a tremendous art collection but we really needed a dedicated space to share it with the public,” said the museum’s Chief Curator Laura Rice. “We also wanted to engage those visitors who might think they don’t want to see an art exhibit, so we took a broad view of ‘art’ really focusing on creativity and the inspiration artists and creators find in nature in the Adirondacks.”
Rice also indicated that art has played a significant role in creating an image of the Adirondacks, in reflecting a sense of place and defining the region’s relationship to nature. It is so much that this connection sets the tone of this exhibit.
“For these reasons, we have chosen to make this space a ‘permanent’ exhibit, but not a static one,” explained Rice. “The range of creative output in the Adirondacks is tremendous, rich and varied, so the work shown in the exhibit will change frequently as our collection continues to grow.”
When asked how the Adirondacks fosters creativity, the museum’s Chief Curator Laura Rice answered that she thinks “it comes from different places for each artist.”
Rice offered the example of painter George Grosz, who left his native Germany right before the Nazis took power, emigrated to New
