Gone are the days when the Maldives was almost exclusively a honeymooner’s paradise. Today, across the 200-odd resorts that pepper its many postcard-perfect islands you’ll find family retreats, adventure-focused resorts and ultra-chic hideaways. In the lagoon at the heart of a cluster of Maldivian Anantara properties, you’ll find all three.
A 30-minute speed boat ride from the capital and international transport hub, Malé, sees guests draw up to a glowing blue lagoon and scattering of islands in the South Malé Atoll. The largest is home to the family-friendly, activity-focused Anantara Dhigu. To the east, Naladhu is the private and most exclusive island retreat, where one-percenters bask in huge private villas. To the south of both sits Anantara Veli, the adults-only option that marries the best of all worlds. Drifting lazily between them, bath-warm lagoon waters shimmer and ripple with life, illuminating everything in a sun-blissed blue glow.
Anantara Veli is the pick of the three, not long ago reopened following a full redesign and refit by New York based Yuji Yamazaki. Inspired by the natural opulence of the lagoon and Anantara’s extraordinary setting, Yamazaki has focused on the privacy and wellness of Veli’s adult-only clientele by creating synchronicity with the stunning surroundings. The effects are evident from the moment you arrive.
Jetties, villas, restaurants, bars and facilities are connected by intimate palm-shaded paths. Sand corridors venture to hidden viewpoints, hammocks strung between curving coconut palms, sun disappearing beyond. At the water’s edge they emerge from the canopy and merge into wooden walkways slung low over the lagoon, guiding guests to their over-water villas with only the silent company of sharks and rays gliding below.
Those over-water villas are the archetype of Maldivian luxury. With or without a pool, each offers direct access to the lagoon from expansive decks. Thanks to that redesign, a clever layout that creates privacy without compromising on views to the horizon. Flooded with light, they’re the epitome of fuss-free luxury. Cool colors, natural textile patterns, white-wash walls and sheets set against powder blue throws and accessories—a reflection of the color scheme Mother Nature has chosen outside. There are few better ways to spend a day than floating in your private over-water pool watching Maldivian life drift by on distant Gulhi, one of the inhabited islands, while your villa host delivers ice cold cocktails to your door.
Stroll back landside over those wooden walkways and you’ll stumble upon a series of newly built Beach Villas, now classed as the top room category on Veli. Set far enough back from the shore to offer privacy (yet still just steps

Mark your calendars: On April 8, 2024, a rare total solar eclipse will cut a path across the continent beginning with Mexico, passing through the US, and exiting through Canada. The line of totality for this celestial phenomenon will cross through 13 US states with some areas seeing a maximum totality of over four minutes (including Bloomington, Indiana, and Mesquite, Texas). So, there are plenty of chances to observe the eclipse as it arches from Texas to Maine, hitting Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire on the way.
I began my exploration of the countless bike paths in New York City as soon as I arrived. As a longtime cyclist in London, I knew that cycling is a satisfying way to get to know a city as a newcomer, and it’s no different in New York: you whip through neighborhoods, witnessing the landscape changing character dramatically between blocks. (My first ever bike ride took me past the copper-colored mansions of Brooklyn Heights, along the tourist-crowded cobbled streets of Dumbo, through Hasidic South Williamsburg and ended outside a crummy dive bar on Grand.) Riding a bike also requires a certain mindset, a kind of calm hyper awareness as you assess your surroundings. It means that you really notice things on a bike: potholes and perfectly flattened rats that need dodging, but also scraps of conversations, or the gauzy silhouette of the Empire State Building peeking out behind skyscrapers to signpost where you are.
