A devastating structural collapse at a beachside restaurant in Palma de Mallorca resulted in four fatalities and 16 injuries. Emergency crews and government officials respond swiftly to the crisis.

A two-storey restaurant collapsed on the shores of Palma de Mallorca, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to 16 others. This tragedy occurred in one of the prime tourist locations within Spain’s scenic Balearic Islands, according to statements from the country’s national police.

Emergency responders described the condition of seven of the injured as “very serious,” while nine others sustained serious injuries. All affected individuals have been transported to various medical facilities throughout Palma for urgent care, as reported on the X social media platform by local emergency services.

As the night progressed, local police finalized search and rescue efforts and focused on stabilizing the site, as detailed by a police spokesperson during a midnight interview with RNE radio station. The spokesperson emphasized the critical need for quiet at the disaster site to aid in detecting any potential survivors still trapped beneath the debris. Preliminary assessments suggest that the collapse might have been caused by excessive weight on the structure’s terrace, although investigations into the exact cause are ongoing.

The emergency operations commenced shortly after the first distress calls at around 8 p.m. Firefighting teams and police units were swiftly dispatched to the scene, where psychological support was also made available due to the traumatic nature of the incident.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed his deep concern for the restaurant collapsed. Via X, he conveyed his active engagement with the situation and discussions with local and regional authorities. The Prime Minister affirmed the government’s readiness to extend necessary assistance, including deploying additional resources and personnel to support the ongoing emergency responses.

“I want to extend my deepest condolences to the families of those who have passed away and express my hopes for a swift recovery for the injured,” stated Sanchez.

Footage broadcast by TVE, the state-owned broadcaster, late into the evening depicted a scene of urgency with firefighters clearing debris at the Medusa Beach Club and ambulances standing by to assist the victims of this unfortunate disaster.
