Southwest Airlines has always been a fan favorite for its baggage policy, which allows all passengers two free checked bags, regardless of status or ticket.
This policy is already unlike most other airlines, who charge those without status or on economy tickets for each bag. But Southwest takes it a step further by including free golf and ski bags in their offer. Heck, even surfboards on flights to Hawaii fly for free.
Now, Southwest is debuting a baggage tracking feature that will allow passengers to know where their free checked bags are at all times.
It’s good news to hear, because while its baggage policies have been industry leading, Southwest has traditionally lagged on its technology. We all saw what happened when their system overloaded last year, with employees describing its systems and technology as “antiquated.”
Indeed, American Airlines has had a baggage tracking app/feature since way back in 2017.
For Southwest, it’s better late than never.
The tracking ability won’t prevent your bag from getting lost, but it can save time in the event it does go missing. Previously, you’d have to stand at baggage claim until all the bags come out to know that yours is lost. However, the tracking allows a passenger to know that their bag never made it on the plane well in advance of landing.
Whether the information garnered from the tracking feature will increase or decrease anxiety depends on the person. It wouldn’t be a great feeling, for example, to see that your bag was not loaded onto the plane as you approach the runway for takeoff. That’s one way to ensure a long flight.
But, for those that believe knowledge is power, the technology will bring peace of mind to many who want to follow along with the progress of their bag, especially on trips with multiple stops and layovers.
And, of course, it’s good to see Southwest moving forward and upgrading its technology. Hopefully, that trend continues far into the future.
