Speed is one of the main contributing factors to deaths on the nation’s roads, and since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, vehicle speeds have been on the rise, contributing to a spike in fatal traffic crashes.
Intelligent speed assistance technology, if widely employed, could change that stark reality.
Those are the highlights of a new report with a series of recommendations released on Wednesday by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a nonprofit financed by the insurance industry, in conjunction with other industry associations and safety organizations, including the National Safety Council, that are members of the Road to Zero Coalition.
“Speeding causes more than a quarter of all crash deaths every year, accounting for more than 12,000 lost lives in 2021,” Jessica Cicchino, vice president of research at the Insurance Institute, said in a statement. “In-vehicle technologies can be an important part of the solution.”
The driver assistance system manages a car’s speed via in-vehicle cameras and maps. The camera reads posted signs or GPS mapping software to identify the posted speed limit and alerts drivers when they’re going too fast, researchers said, noting that some ISA systems are more aggressive: they discourage speeding by reducing power to the engine when the driver crosses the limit.
In the Road to Zero Coalition’s report, "Recommendations for the Development and Use of Vehicle-Based Approaches to Prevent Speeding,” automakers, regulators and fleet operators are urged to promote intelligent speed assistance (ISA) and speed limiters “to help curb an epidemic of speeding.”
Among its recommendations are that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration require that all new vehicles be equipped with ISA, set performance standards for the technology that at a minimum provide a warning when the vehicle exceeds the speed limit, add an ISA evaluation to the New Car Assessment Program, and that specific applications of the technology be applied for high-risk groups like repeat speeding offenders and teen drivers.
Teens are more likely than any other age group to be speeding when they are involved in a crash, researchers said. “Cars driven by repeat speeding offenders and teens could be equipped with aftermarket ISA systems that reduce power to the engine,” according to the recommendations. “Smartphone apps and in-vehicle systems that warn drivers when they exceed a preset speed could also help curb teen speeding.”
Intelligent Speed Assistance technology has been mandatory in all new vehicles sold in the European Union since July 2022. “The importance of the adoption of the technology cannot be overestimated.” the European Transport Safety Council stated. “ISA is expected to reduce

Winter is coming: Bring it on, say Canadians, who revel in the thrill and magic of the season. Visitors eager to experience the winter months (which in some regions can last from November to April) are always delighted by the expansiveness of nature and intimacy of culture, the ease of engaging in outdoor and indoor activities, and ultimately the warmth of the Canadian welcome. Woven into the culture: Winter is part of the cultural identity of those living within Canada’s borders. According to the Canadian Encyclopedia, the Inuktitut dialect of Nunavik (Arctic Quebec) includes multiple words referring to snow and ice, from qanik (snow falling) to qinu (slushy ice by the sea). The Arctic Winter Games are a multi-sport and an Indigenous cultural event held every two years involving circumpolar peoples around the world. The 2022 Games were pushed to 2023 and held in Wood-Buffalo, Alberta. Yukon is a potential host in 2026.
