In the ever-evolving landscape of air travel, airports play a pivotal role in shaping the passenger experience. From the moment travelers step foot in a terminal to the final boarding call, the efficiency, amenities and overall ambiance of an airport can greatly influence their journey.
So what are the best airports in North America?
The winners have been announced in the new Airport Service Quality (ASQ) awards, which were conducted by the Airports Council International (ACI) in collaboration with travel technology company Amadeus. To come up with the list, ASQ evaluated airports based on passenger feedback gathered through extensive surveys. Nearly 600,000 responses were collected worldwide in 2023.
Spanning a range of categories—based on size and topic—these awards provide valuable insights into passenger satisfaction and preferences, also highlighting the airports that excel in cleanliness, staff dedication, ease of the journey and overall enjoyment.
In a surprise move, New York City’s LaGuardia Airport—which Joe Biden once called a “third-world country,” Donald Trump referred to as the “laughing stock throughout the world” and Saturday Night Live ridiculed—was named one of the two best airports in North America in the 25 to 40 million passenger category.
The airport earned an overall passenger satisfaction score of 4.24 out of 5 in the ASQ awards—a 20% leap from 2018, when it was rated the worst airport in North America. LaGuardia’s triumph comes on the heels of an $8 billion overhaul. “LaGuardia’s days as a punchline for late night jokes is finally over,” Port Authority executive director Rick Cotton told NBC News.
Alongside LaGuardia, Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport was also recognized for its excellence in aviation in the 25 to 40 million passenger category.
Other notable winners include Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Toronto Pearson International Airport—which topped the mega airport category (over 40 million passengers per year).
Dallas Love Field Airport and Tampa International Airport topped the large airport category (15 to 25 million passengers per year).
Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, Indianapolis International Airport and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport were the winners in the midsize airport category (5 to 15 million passengers per year).
Gerald R. Ford International Airport, Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport and Maine’s Portland International Jetport won the small airport category (2 to 5 million passengers per year).
For the smallest airport category (less than 2 million passengers per year), two Canadian airports took the win—Fort McMurray International
