Nature lovers will be thrilled to spend as long as possible in the Atacama Desert and Tierra Atacama is the perfect luxury outpost to begin your adventure. Guests arrive via an adobe-lined path to enter a glass-enclosed lobby with spectacular open vistas. All public areas of the hotel provide views of the Andes and the imposing Licancabur Volcano. Lush foliage welcomes guests into the outdoor area where you can lounge by the pool in the daytime and snuggle up on a couch in front of a firepit after dark.
Days usually involve some amount of hiking and the spa is a very popular place to spend an afternoon or evening. Water, or “uma” in the native Aymara language, is an important spa element at Tierra Atacama. There is a water circuit that involves an outdoor hot tub, an indoor pool with a massaging waterfall and a steam room. But the real reason to visit the spa is to enjoy a terrific massage. Treatments incorporate organic, locally sourced ingredients such as sheep’s milk, honey and clay. Yoga classes are held outside in the gardens, surrounded by tall grasses.
Rooms on property also embody a commitment to natural elements. You will pass pomegranate trees on the way to your room and then be welcomed by supremely comfortable beds and more spectacular views. The décor features handwoven throws, cowhide rugs, llama figures carved from the volcanic rock of nearby Toconao and lovely outdoor showers.
However, the real reason to visit the Atacama Desert is to experience the incredible landscapes and outdoor adventures. Experiences range in intensity from a stroll around the saltwater flats to see the resident flamingos to an extreme all-day hike up the Cerro Toco volcano. There are multiple activities in both the morning and afternoon to choose from, and you can also visit the Tatio Geysers at sunrise (and enjoy an alfresco breakfast), visit ancient petroglyphs in the Rainbow Valley, hike through the Devil’s Canyon or visit the Piedros Rojas Lagoon. Regardless of the adventure you choose, you can expect a first-rate and very enthusiastic guide.
One of my favorite activities is stargazing. The Atacama is located in one of the driest places on earth with an altitude of over 10,000 feet and almost no light pollution; it is home to ALMA, one of the world’s largest and most sensitive telescopes. Tierra Atacama has its own high-powered telescope, allowing you to clearly see the Milky Way, the rings of Saturn and multiple constellations that are truly breathtaking.
Dining is another highlight. Almost all of the produce is organic and meals feature Chilean, as well as international cuisine. You can expect to savor fresh fish, homemade breads, local meat and fruits that you will not see at home. One of the kitchen’s

The Rock of Cashel, a medieval stronghold that once served as the seat of Ireland’s kings, is undeniably magnificent. Perched high on an outcrop overlooking lush Tipperary farmland, its round towers, high crosses and 13th-century Gothic cathedral attract a steady stream of visitors. But it’s not the only Irish castle or abbey to draw large crowds. Even off season, there are long queues for internationally recognised sites such as Bunratty, Clonmacnoise, Glendalough, Dunluce, Blarney and Kylemore. Unesco-designated world heritage site Skellig Michael (famous as Luke Skywalker’s island sanctuary in Star Wars) has limited access, and other ancient buildings have been made into five-star hotels.

Auckland’s 1.6 million people are spread out across a large geographic area, in many distinct neighborhoods.
Imagine waking up to gorgeous lake views surrounded by misty mountains and trees lining the horizon as far as the eye can see. That’s the magic of Jasper National Park, the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies, where I recently spent a cozy retreat to welcome the fall season. Coming from the scorching heat of Phoenix, Arizona, my lungs craved the crisp morning air, while the desert girl in me relished and autumnal mountain hues — and I soaked it all in from the private balcony of an alpine lodge on the shores of Pyramid Lake.
According to the popular Noah Kahan song, Stick Season is named for a term that was used by some of the older folks in the town he grew up in to describe this really miserable time of year when it's just kind of gray and cold, and there's no snow yet and the beauty of the foliage is done.
As diverse as it is enchanting, Mexico is a year-round destination. This 32-state nation boasts glistening coastlines, numerous microclimates and an astonishingly varied terrain.
The Nordic region has so much to offer the culinary traveler, from wild-caught salmon and reindeer stews to cardamom pastries and Scandinavia’s distinctly savory spirit, aquavit. One culinary treat lesser-known outside the region is the cloudberry.
Netflix has a new documentary series—“Predators”—with incredible cinematography of some of the world’s apex carnivores, including the polar bears of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada. Churchill is known as the polar bear capital of the world (as well as the beluga whale capital) and it’s easy to see both animals in the wild on a trip to this subarctic Canadian town.
