According to the popular Noah Kahan song, Stick Season is named for a term that was used by some of the older folks in the town he grew up in to describe this really miserable time of year when it's just kind of gray and cold, and there's no snow yet and the beauty of the foliage is done.
This year, several New England hotels are taking back 'stick season' and rolling out the red carpet for savvy travelers and their furry friends, who can take advantage of cost-friendly off-season rates, as well as fewer crowds, perfect for some off-leash fun, and of course, stick fetching.
Woodstock Inn & Resort (Woodstock, Vermont)
Once Vermont's famous foliage season ends, it becomes a playground for pups. To ensure travelers' furry friends have a fun and stay safe, the idyllic Woodstock Inn & Resort has debuted a "Doggy Hiking Concierge" to help visitors navigate Woodstock's 60 miles of interconnected trails and pathways that wind through the Woodstock Village, nearby meadows and woodlands, scenic vistas and rural countrysides. In addition to pointing you in the direction of Woodstock's best dog-friendly hikes, they're ready to provide helpful hints and supplies to make the hiking trip one to remember. Once back at the Inn, pups can curl up on a comfy Orvis dog bed and enjoy a cookie or two before settling in for a good night's sleep.
The Brenton (Newport, Rhode Island)
One of the newest editions to the ever-glitzy Newport coast, The Brenton Hotel, debuted in 2020 with 57 sumptuously-appointed rooms and suites. The property is redefining Gilded Age luxury with Bilgari amenities, the Salt Spa and even a 36 foot Hinckley Picnic Boat ready to whisk guests away at a moment's notice for a private harbor escape. Their new "Morning Pup Crawl" package is a "bed and barkfast" offer that provides pet parents with a custom, hand-painted map indicating dog-friendly parks, water fountains and, of course, fire hydrants. After returning from their morning stroll, pets and owners alike will receive a five-star breakfast of their choice in their room and enjoy late check out and a waived pet fee. The Brenton's standard Top Dog Menu is also available, featuring doggy dishes like salmon and sweet potato along with grilled chicken and rice. The hotel also partners with local Lucky Dog Resort to provide pet concierge services like sitting and walking.
The Admiral's Inn (Ogunquit, Maine)
Ogunquit's scenic beach areas are a favorite among New England beach goers in the summer, and starting in September through March, dogs are allowed to romp along the coast with their traveling companions. The Admiral's Inn stays open until the New Year and offers a "Barks and Beaches" package. When staying two or more nights, the hotel will

Whoopie pies probably won't save humankind. But a stop at DonnaSue Bakes + Cooks in Vermont's Champlain Islands is sure to boost your faith in humanity. As soon as my mom and I see the large handwritten letters spelling out “PIE” on a sun-faded shed off Route 2 in the town of Grand Isle, we hit the brakes on our bikes. A sign next to a Betsy Ross flag informs us that Sunday business hours are “by chance.”

“Chowder has always been here,” says Emily Haynes. “It isn’t just a dish for Nova Scotians — it’s who we are.” The executive director of Taste of Nova Scotia, an association that promotes businesses that champion local ingredients, Emily is taking me for a blustery coastal stroll along the Bay of Fundy. “Chowder was shipboard food,” she says as we pass fishing boats stranded on the bay’s muddy bottom; the Atlantic inlet between the Canadian Maritime provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick is home to the world’s highest tides. “Fishermen would cook salt cod or fresh catch with salt pork in hot water, then ship’s biscuits were added as a thickener. It was a tasty meal that could feed a whole ship from one pot.”
