One of the most anticipated hotel openings of 2023 — yes, we're flipping the calendar back a year — is finally taking reservations in the sunny city of Palm Springs, California. And it's great news for Hyatt loyalists.
The Thompson Palm Springs has been a long-awaited hotel, and we've been waiting to book following a slew of delays, but sometimes the best things in life are worth the wait.
According to the Hyatt website, bookings are available for both cash and points starting Sept. 30. Cash rates in October appear to start around $450 but can reach upward of $500 on certain dates. As this is a Category 5 property, World of Hyatt members can book award nights starting at 17,000 points per night on off-peak dates. Through the end of the year, there appear to be a good number of off-peak days.
It's worth noting, however, that with any new hotel, there's still a chance that it might not open exactly as scheduled.
The soon-to-open Thompson Palm Springs actually was originally ideated as an Andaz concept all the way back in 2015. While it's unclear what exactly happened in the hotel's formative years to lead to the swap to a Thompson property, the nearly 10-year wait certainly has a lot to show for it.
Once open, the hotel will have 168 rooms and 18 suites decked out in midcentury modern design and architecture from two design houses: B2 Architecture + Design and SMS Architecture. The hotel's rooms will range from 380-square-foot entry-level king rooms with patios, 55-inch televisions and curated minibars to massive suites with direct pool access, San Jacinto mountain views and living areas with even larger televisions.
The Thompson brand is no stranger to incredible restaurants and bars (just ask anyone who has visited Thompson Nasvhille about the rooftop bar L.A. Jackson), and the Palm Springs outpost is sure to be no different.
Dining options at the hotel include a restaurant called Lola Rose Grand Mezze, helmed by Quentin Garcia. According to the website, the restaurant offers a menu featuring Middle Eastern flavors with influences from other global cuisines. This restaurant will also oversee in-room and poolside dining.
Bar Issi will offer a Mediterranean-inspired menu of small plates and cocktails while Hall Napa Valley, an indoor-outdoor wine-tasting outlet, will serve varietals from Hall, Walt and Baca Wines once it is open.
Burn off all those bites at the gym, which has luxury equipment from TRX and Peloton, plus everything else you'd need for a solid workout. Or, skip the gym and go shopping around the adjoining 35,000 square feet of retail and dining space.
Of course, no hotel in Palm Springs is complete without a pool, and this Thompson has two pool decks offering various city and mountain

On the first day of summer, I stepped out into the blistering heat from my apartment building in Alphabet City and headed west on 4th Street, bound for my home in the Catskills, some 130 miles north. I carried a 35-pound backpack filled with camping gear and little idea of what lay ahead.
