No less a meteorology authority than the tried-and-true 2024 Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts snow, seasonable cold weather and all of winter’s delights for this upcoming winter season. This winter’s forecast will surely excite snow bunnies and sweater lovers alike, promising a lot of cold and snow across North America, the kind of weather ski resorts dream about during the off season.
According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, snowfall will be above normal across most snow-prone areas (except for the Pacific Northwest). Get prepared for oodles of fluffy white throughout the season. Keep a shovel at the ready early in the season, especially in the Northeast and Midwest, where the snow will arrive beginning in November with storms, showers and flurries continuing through the start of spring. Along with above-normal snow, expect to see normal to colder-than-normal temperatures in those areas that typically receive snow. Expect just the right amount of chill in the air for an afternoon of adventurous snow sports, such as downhill and cross country skiing.
Coming off a visitation record for the 2022-23 season, ski resorts throughout the country are hoping to duplicate or perhaps surpass last year’s numbers. The final skier visit numbers have been calculated and the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) reports a record visitation of an estimated 65.4 million skiers and riders to U.S. ski areas during the 2022-23 season, an increase of almost 5 million visits from the previous season.
Skier visits are a key performance indicator for the ski industry. Two consecutive seasons of record visitation signals that the U.S. ski industry is healthy, and that the demand for outdoor recreation is strong. Factors contributing to this record season include: a robust snow year in the Rockies and Pacific Southwest regions; growing options of season passes and frequency products; and an increased desire to get outside, especially among lapsed skiers who have returned to the slopes since the pandemic. The number of operating ski areas also jumped from 473 last season to 481 this season, another positive indicator. However, the growth in operating areas contributed only marginally to the overall increase.
NSAA divides the country into six regions – Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Rocky, Pacific Northwest, Pacific Southwest — with two regions having record skier visits. The Rocky Mountain region reported a record high number of skier visits for the second consecutive season, totaling 27.9 million. The Pacific Northwest region also finished with its best year on record, totaling 4.5 million. Other regions with increases in season-over-season skier visits were the Northeast and Pacific Southwest (3rd best year on record). Only two
