It's staggering how many people can pass through the world's busiest airports in a year, especially considering the proportion of people who fly regularly is quite small—only 1.5-2 flights per year for the average person, depending on the data used. For passengers, it's helpful to know which are the busiest airports, the busiest routes and which airlines and airports can get its travelers through on time, with the least delays.
OAG recently published its data for 2023, compiled between January and December, for the busiest airports and the busiest routes. Likewise, Cirium published its On-Time Performance Review for 2023 for airports and airlines.
What's clear is that air travel has made a comeback from its dip during the pandemic and although it doesn't appear to be at 2019 levels across all regions, some routes rebounded—the U.S. domestic market reached 20% above 2019 levels by the third quarter.
The global winner for punctuality was Colombia's Avianca airlines although when networks and the number of passengers globally is considered, it is Delta airlines that won in terms of operational excellence, reporting an on-time arrival rate of 84.72% across all planes in 2023. As a comparison, the world's second oldest airline, Avianca, managed just above 213,000 flights, while Delta flew just over 1.6 million. Qatar, Iberia and American Airlines also made the top ten for top performing airlines.
To be clear, a flight is considered an on-time arrival or departure if the plane arrives at or departs from the gate within 15 minutes of its scheduled time.
Minneapolis-St. Paul airport came first for punctuality, both in the category of large airport and globally. Osaka, Japan won first place for a medium-sized airport and Mariscal Sucre in Quito, Ecuador won most on-time small airport.
Number one was Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson, which counted an impressive 61 million seats (it was also the busiest in 2019 and 2022). Dubai airport was second (57 million seats) and Tokyo was third (53 million seats).
Dallas, Denver, Istanbul in Turkey and Guangzhou in China all made the top ten in 2023 but were only in the top 25 in 2019. Numbers for busiest global airports were calculated using total airline capacity, both domestic and international.
However, when only international capacity is measured, rather than combined with domestic data, the picture is slightly more European focused.
Dubai takes the top spot (56.5 million seats) but it is then followed by London Heathrow, Amsterdam's Schiphol (37 million seats), and Paris Charles de Gaulle airport (nearly 37 million seats).
OAG's top ten busiest airline routes internationally are all in the Middle East and Asia, except for one—the JFK New York to London Heathrow route was

Air travel to and from Israel plunged in the last three months of 2023 amid the Israel-Hamas conflict, but the number of passengers traveling through Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv still rose 10% in 2023.
I've been traveling to Orlando at least twice a month for the past 10 years. Since I visit the city's theme parks so often, I'm always looking for something new to do with family, friends, or by myself.
Frequent Eurocity trains dash north from Milan via the Simplon Tunnel to Switzerland. On the way to the tunnel, those express trains speed by Lake Maggiore, affording fine views of the Borromean Islands. For Switzerland-bound trains, the last station stop in Italy is at the small Piedmont town of Domodossola. The station here is remarkably grand, as befits what was once an important gateway into Italy, with all the paraphernalia of customs and immigration. From Domodossola, it is just another half-hour through the Simplon Tunnel to Brig, an appealing Swiss town that guards the northern end of the Alpine tunnel, before trains head on to Berne, Basel and the north.
Snowy and frigid weather swept the country over the holiday weekend from Texas and the Midwest to the Northeast, canceling and delaying thousands of flights.
Iceland's glaciers, black sand beaches, and the chance of catching the Northern Lights attract well over a million visitors a year. But it wasn't until November that I visited the tiny island nation for the first time, on a reporting trip.
The Blue Lagoon has once again re-opened to visitors in south Iceland following the volcano eruption that caused weeks of closures.
Few destinations better demonstrate the raw power of our planet than Iceland. Its ever-changing landscape, marked by stunning lava fields, hot springs, and glaciers, has been further transformed by a series of volcanic eruptions in recent years, showcasing the tremendous forces of nature.
A warm, subtropical climate makes Honduras an ideal year-round destination so the best time to visit depends on what you want to do when you arrive.
Happy 2024! The start of a New Year brings resolutions, fresh goals, and opportunities to incorporate health and wellness into your life.
One Thursday last March I emerged from the Jungfraujoch, Europe’s highest train station, and crossed into another world. Inside the station, a guide with a novelty Swiss flag was marshalling a party of Asian visitors. Outside, we were soon on the Jungfraufirn, a small glacier that feeds the Aletsch, the largest glacier in the Alps. Sunlight shone through breaks in the cloud, and the ice, flanked by buttresses of dark rock, ran south for miles. The pitch was gentle and the ungroomed snow looked inviting.
It’s going to be a great year for airfare with domestic prices predicted to start even cheaper than 2023 and remain low for the next six months.
