Winter can be a tricky time if you’ve got kids of any age: darker, shorter days and inclement weather mean they inevitably end up stuck inside, with everyone getting bored, cross and arguing about screen time. Why not banish those winter blues with a change of scene and whisk them away on an impromptu weekend trip? After all, spontaneity is now a major travel trend – recent research from Hilton* found that only 22% of UK travellers consider themselves meticulous planners.
You don’t have to go far or be especially extravagant – there are some fantastic indoor and outdoor attractions in the UK that lend themselves perfectly to entertaining the kids over the winter season. What’s more, if you plan a November or December break, you can get them (and you) in the festive spirit with a Christmas-themed visit packed with fairy lights and perhaps a glimpse of Saint Nick himself. And, when you come back exhausted in the evening, Hilton Hotels will ensure that everyone has the perfect base to relax and enjoy themselves, thanks to family-friendly amenities such as connecting rooms, casual eating options and children’s lounges. Having recently experienced a Hilton stay myself, I can vouch for them …
It’s never easy taking three young children away for the night but, when we arrive at the Hilton London Metropole, I know this will be more of a treat than a trial. We arrive there late – and a little grumpy – on a Friday evening after a long day of school and trains. With my youngest heading for a meltdown, I ask reception if we can bring our dinner reservation forward and it’s done, no questions asked. We make our way up to our room, through gleaming gold and marble corridors and up a state-of-the-art glass lift, which enthral my children. A major plus of the Metropole is its connecting rooms which mean you can keep your children close while having a bit of privacy once they go to bed. My son is obsessed with London landmarks and quickly spots Big Ben out of one of our fourth-floor windows.
Eating in public can be stressful with little ones but Carmelita, our waitress at the Tyburn Kitchen, gives the kids colouring sheets to keep them occupied, allowing us the chance to relax with our scallop and squid starters. The kids gladly gobble down their tomato soup, followed by fish strips and steak mains – a big hit all-round. While my husband nearly faints at the sight of the hotel’s enormous signature burger, I enjoy a delicious grilled dover sole, which Carmelita expertly debones while the kids watch on in amazement.
By dessert, we’re all a bit shattered, so we ask if we could have them as room service. Carmelita and team oblige, and soon enough our gigantic chocolate sundaes are being gobbled down with PJs on in front

Located 10 miles off Scotland's north-eastern coast, the Orkney islands are a treasure trove of history, from the famous Neolithic village Skara Brae to the hauntingly beautiful Ring of Brodgar – a spellbinding stone circle that was a site of ritual and ceremony. However, when I visited another of Orkney's famous prehistoric sites, the Maeshowe tomb, my first impression was of an unremarkable green mound surrounded by a ditch.
Snow is falling around me in large, cinematic flakes. It’s 8.45 on a Tuesday morning in mid-January. I’m sitting at the top of a wide empty ski slope, ready to strap into my snowboard. Within minutes, I’m schussing down the powder-soft run, then back to the resort, ready to open my laptop and start a day of work.

The first surprise is that a half-hour trip by train from Edinburgh to North Berwick is really as far as you need to go for a taste of Scotland that is elemental and remote, a place of windswept beaches, stunning coastal walks and panoramic views. The West Coast and the Highlands may be more extreme, but then so is the journey to get there. This, by contrast, is an easier but no less enjoyable adventure.
Founded by the Romans in the 1st century, Bath originally went by the Latin name of Aquae Sulis after the Celtic deity of healing and water. The setting was chosen for its thermal springs which later saw Bath evolve into a fashionable spa resort. Grand terraces were constructed during the Georgian era using honey-colored limestone from the surrounding downs. Nowadays, Bath remains a stellar destination for romantic getaways, family vacations, spa weekends, and bachelor/bachelorette parties (locally known as stag and hen dos).
