The Fire In The Hole roller coaster in the Silver Dollar City amusement park in the Ozark Mountains will take its final ride today. The world’s oldest indoor roller coaster has been thrilling guests since it first opened in 1972. The legendary roller coaster was one of the first indoor coasters and continued to hold the title of the world's longest-standing indoor roller coaster until now.
“Though we are now down to the final hours of the original Fire In The Hole, this ride has been meaningful to our guests for generations,” said Brad Thomas, Silver Dollar City president, in a press release.
“The coaster tells a story of the Ozark Mountains and is uniquely Silver Dollar City, but also a ride families can ride together, as millions of children have ridden with their parents and grandparents. We know we will still have many first-time riders, while some have ridden countless times over the decades, returning this weekend for one last memory. Many of those guests even first rode with their grandparents years ago, now riding with their own grandkids!”
The theme park selected the final 48 riders earlier this month on various social media giveaways. The winning group will fill the ride’s four coaster trains after the park closes for the day. The giveaway winners will be the very last public riders of the coaster and will receive a mounted piece of the coaster track and other keepsake items to commemorate the roller coaster’s retirement after 51 seasons of operation.
Silver Dollar City has also announced an all-new Fire In The Hole which will debut in the spring of 2024. The $30 million ride is inspired by the original coaster and will be nearly a third-of-a-mile long and feature a powered incline, three gravity-driven drops, as well as a quick-splash landing.
