Now, 130 years later, Labor Day has become more widely known as a three-day weekend celebration that officially ends summer. According to Dana Studebaker, the vice president of marketing at online travel agency BeachBound Vacations, Labor Day weekend is also generally considered the least busy of the summer holidays, which is welcome after this year's record-setting Fourth of July.
"Last year, Labor Day weekend saw 13% less reservations than the average summer weekend and there was a 24% drop in passenger traffic," Studebaker says, adding that lower traffic and reservations "means travelers can enjoy a more low-key vacation with fewer crowds and usually lower costs."
