An airline in India, IndiGo Airlines, now allows female travelers to see the gender of the passenger sitting next to them in an effort to make women more comfortable.
«IndiGo is proud to announce the introduction of a new feature that aims to make the travel experience more comfortable for our female passengers,» the airline said in a statement to T+L. Although reports of the the seating option have recently surfaced, the airline confirmed to T+L that the seating option rolled out in May.
«The feature offers visibility of seats booked by female passengers, only during web check-in» and will be available to solo travelers and women traveling with families, the airline said.
Male passengers will not have the same ability to check the gender of fellow travelers.
The Daily Mail reported reported the idea for the policy came from a survey that asked female passengers what would make them more comfortable.
The airline added the new program is in line with its “#GirlPower ethos.”
In India, female-only train cars have been around for years, according to the Guardian, offering a safe place to travel. Other major cities, like Dubai, have similar programs with women-only train cars.
