In a city known for its wealth of food options, you might be surprised to learn that one of the best meals you’ll have in London – or, perhaps, anywhere – is dinner at Nipa Thai in the Royal Lancaster London. Two months later, my husband and I are still talking about it – and the rest of our luxurious two night stay in this gem of a hotel.
Having learned the hard way the importance of arriving at a destination at least a day before embarking on a cruise, we booked the pre-cruise extension for our recent British Isles Explorer itinerary on Viking so we could spend two nights in London.
Royal Lancaster London, the hotel Viking uses for its cruise extensions, is located next to the Lancaster Gate (Central Line) tube station and just a few minutes walk from Paddington, making it really easy to get around. Best of all, it’s right across the street from Hyde Park, whose spectacular views can be enjoyed over breakfast in Park Restaurant and from every window of our beautiful Park Suite — even the roomy bathroom.
We loved the suite for so many reasons, including the fact that the living room area itself was bigger than many hotel rooms. It was well laid out, with a round table large enough to use for eating or working, and it boasted an eclectic collection of art and travel books — a feature that always warms my heart.
Surrounded by sweeping views of London – we could see the London Eye from our bed – it was hard to tear our jetlagged selves away and actually leave the suite.
Although we did manage to visit Camden (which we really wanted to check out since binge watching Trying on Apple TV+), see an amazing production of The Pillowman and indulge in Pret-a-Portea at the Berkeley, we spent a lot of time in the hotel – much of it eating.
We had a quick lunch in the Park Lounge when we first arrived. The fish and chips were delicious and the open lounge welcoming and comfortable but what made it truly special was the service. We had some great conversations and were offered lots of insider tips on what to see and do in London, which we’ve filed for future trips.
We had hearty breakfasts (included with the Viking pre-cruise extension) both mornings at the buffet in Park Restaurant, where we watched London start its day through the floor to ceiling windows overlooking Hyde Park. We mixed elements of a traditional English breakfast with croissants and fruit and smoked salmon while we people-watched and marveled at the fact that everyone seemed to remember to look in the correct direction before crossing the street.
The surprising highlight of our stay, though, was dinner at Nipa Thai. We had chosen the hotel’s award-winning restaurant mainly for convenience and were blown away to find that the food was exceptional.

There are places I feel compelled to visit once, and there are places that beckon multiple visits. As Mexico’s fourth largest city and a cradle of signficant cultural and culinary importance, Puebla falls squarely into the latter category. It took one trip in 2017 for me to fall hard for the historic center’s candy-colored buildings, Baroque-style churches, artisan crafts like Talavera pottery, and last but not least, the local food and drink.
Before we met him, we expected that Matthew Goode would have a certain refined British humor, and it turns out we were right. His success with hit series like Downtown Abbey and The Crown, blockbusters like The King’s Man and Leap Year, and cult films like Match Point and Stoker has not affected the actor’s open and affable attitude. Now he adds another credit to his list as he stars alongside Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button in Hackett's new autumn-winter 2023 campaign.

The former Trump International Hotel, Waikiki, in Hawaii will reincarnate next year as the Wākea Waikiki Beach, part of LXR Hotels & Resorts, Hilton's luxury soft brand.
When it comes to food, London's West End district in the city center doesn’t have the best rap. Many locals will say that you need to venture out of zone one to eat some authentic cuisine. I disagree.
With a new year approaching and new resolutions in mind, learning a language is one of those items that often appears on many personal lists. Travel experts and language institutions regularly publish surveys on the best destinations to do so, echoing the simple fact that in our interconnected, “globalized” world, the ability to communicate in more than one language opens new opportunities, experiences and understanding.

Whether it’s in pursuit of a new community, better weather, or a new adventure, there are many reasons people pack up their lives and become expats. Once the preserve of expats, the notion of Thanksgiving is increasingly embraced in the U.K. as both a gentle practice of seeing family or friends but also as a form of autumnal appreciation; an adult-orientated extension of harvest festivals that most schools still hold in Britain. While adhering to the understandable and delicious importance of turkey and cranberry sauce, top chefs also use Thanksgiving to bring British ingredients to the table.
