Spring is all about new beginnings. New builds, new renovations, new chapters for once-forgotten properties—and this season’s hotel openings offer all of the above. The following fresh openings–maybe it’s the renovation of a Gilded Age mansion in the middle of Denver, or the rescue of a midcentury California motor lodge from demolition–remind us that at their best, hotels bring a renewed sense of optimism to their communities. This spring, we’re showered with an intriguing slate of openings across the country—which are sparking joy for you?
Where it’s located: Many travelers tend to view Denver as a mere waypoint on their way into the mountains, but Urban Cowboy’s first western property makes the case for spending a night (or more) in the city. It’s located in Capitol Hill, a historic neighborhood dense with restaurants, nightlife, museums and shops.
Why we’re excited: A brand called Urban Cowboy opening in Denver? Finally! It’s been a long time coming for founders Lyon Porter and Jersey Banks, who have created beautiful properties in Brooklyn, the Catskills, and Nashville, but there’s something extra special about this one, their first location in the West. They found a beautiful Gilded Age mansion in the heart of Capitol Hill, restored it in partnership with GBX Group and Historic Denver, and filled it with all with all those Urban Cowboy touches that have earned their brand so many fans—including, we are thrilled to report, those hand-hammered copper soaking tubs.
Where it’s located: River Lodge overlooks Highway 101 between Paso Robles and Templeton, a part of the Central Coast that only continues to attract more and more of our attention. Wineries, olive groves, hot springs, and all the shops and markets of downtown Paso Robles are just minutes away.
Why we’re excited: The River Lodge is not just a great hotel, but a great story, too. This historic motor lodge—a prime example of California’s Googie architecture movement—had sat abandoned for years and was slated for demolition before the San Luis Obispo-based Nomada Hotel Group swooped in. They gut-renovated the property, bringing it into the 21st century while preserving its original look. The River Lodge’s new chapter features all the modern amenities that travelers love: fire pits, an adults-only pool and hot tub, and a curated lobby market with artisanal picnic snacks and local wines. Make sure to take the house e-bikes for a spin—River Lodge might still have that quintessential motor lodge character, but everything you’ll want to explore is a short bike ride away.
Where it’s located: Hotel Ana & Bel will be the first full-service boutique hotel in Fishtown, Philly’s trendy artistic enclave.
Why we’re excited: In true Philly fashion, the

Although many people think of Oregon as one big forest — or equate the Pacific Northwest with Portland, its unabashedly weirdest and biggest city — this massive state offers so much more.
New Jersey might be one of the most underrated destinations in the US. Sandwiched between New York City and Philadelphia, the Garden State is often delegated to the shadows (or as a punchline to its urban neighbors). But this state has plenty of charm—from its 130 miles of Jersey Shore beaches and sprawling natural sites (like the Pinelands biosphere reserve and the country’s largest collection of cherry blossom trees) to its historic riverside towns and sky-high mountains.
After a volatile few years for airfare, prices this summer should be a bit more predictable thanks to stabilizing supply and demand, experts say.
Summer holidays are right around the corner, and for travelers hoping to book a vacation home, the time to start planning is now.
Travelers who live on the West Coast of the United States have long bemoaned the lack of direct flights to the Caribbean from international airports in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle. Normally, flying to the Caribbean from the West Coast requires stopovers and plane changes in hubs like Atlanta, New York, Houston, or Miami. Between the time difference and the layovers, flying from the West Coast to the Caribbean can easily take at least a full day—or may even require an overnight stop. With closer warm-weather destinations like Mexico and Hawai‘i beckoning, many travelers in the Pacific time zone simply skip the Caribbean.
For the April 8 total solar eclipse, photographer Levi Mandel traveled to Buffalo, New York, to observe the celestial event—and the many others who journeyed for it. Below, he shares the experience through text and photos.
The totality of an eclipse is never long enough. My first total solar eclipse experience in 2017 made for the shortest two minutes of my life: the sun transforming into a blazing diamond ring, the beautiful delirium of darkness, that perfect circle in the sky. Before I knew it, the eclipse was over—and my friends and I were plotting how we could catch our next.
How do you love a bike?

With its impressive terrain of imperious mountains, volcano-ravaged landscapes and sumptuous rainforest, Washington State is understandably renowned amongst keen hikers.
Aerospace companies across the globe are breaking from the norm of producing traditional "tube and wing" aircraft and instead looking into futuristic technologies that will make flying more efficient and eco-friendly.
