These days, you need only bring the bare essentials to enjoy a river cruise; there’s no need to over-pack. It’s always a good idea to start by making a list of things that you use on a daily basis. Once you have the base, cross off non-essentials and add in items you think you might need—or wouldn’t want to be stuck without. In other words, toiletries, medications, comfortable clothes, and your photo ID.
For daytime wear, jeans, slacks, and shorts are your best friends. In the evening, plan to adopt a “country-club casual” style. Ladies, the right scarf can make even the most casual outfit look fabulous—and can be used in a multitude of ways such as a wrap on chilly nights, a swimsuit coverup, a belt, and as a decorative scarf to dress up an outfit. Gentlemen can leave the stuffy suits at home and bring slacks, khakis, polo shirts and/or dress shirts. A sport coat for dinner always adds a nice touch. One pair of comfortable dress shoes should be more than enough for a week-long vacation.
Check on the weather forecast for your cruising region, for a clear idea of any additional items you might need. Pack both warm and cool clothes for layering, a nice accessory or two to jazz things up, and sensible shoes—that way, you’re ready to roll on the river without extra baggage. Always pack sunscreen, a hat for sunny days, and a refillable water bottle.
