Airline luggage fees have been a hot topic recently, with several carriers raising their charges for checked baggage. How should travelers pack differently as they prepare for their summer vacations? I asked Rob Cooper, CEO of the luggage manufacturer Travelpro, how this will change the way we travel.
Since the beginning of the year, five major U.S. airlines have raised their luggage fees. What does that mean for travelers?
We’re likely to see an increase in demand for carry-on luggage, with travelers choosing to upgrade their current pieces for more efficient and functional bags. I think you’ll also see a bigger emphasis on personal bags, such as larger totes, backpacks, and duffels allowing travelers to maximize what they carry on.
You're doubling down on backpacks. Why?
We’re seeing increased demand for backpacks across the board, from frequent travelers and commuters to customers looking for a new everyday bag. Backpacks provide the utmost convenience on the go, as everything you need is right at your fingertips.
So is that your immediate takeaway from these new luggage fees — consider switching to a backpack?
It’s more that consumers will add backpacks to their travel choices, especially travel-focused backpacks, with features like sleeves for attaching to their wheeled carry-on, RFID protection, quick stash pockets for electronics, and the ability to pack more with expansion features.
Airlines make billions of dollars a year from luggage fees. But I've been hearing from a lot of readers who say they've run afoul of the luggage templates at the airport. Their carry-on bags won't fit and they are forced to check their belongings and pay more. Can your new luggage address that problem, and if so, how?
Everyone travels differently, and some travelers prefer to have a slightly larger carry-on option, which may not fit in every aircraft’s overhead bin. I believe luggage companies can address this by ensuring they offer carry-on sizes that fit airline size guidelines.
It’s also important that travelers avoid overpacking their carry-on suitcase. I know it’s tempting, and an expansion zipper makes it even easier to add that additional item, but doing so also means you’re more likely to have your carry-on become checked luggage.
What are some of the latest luggage innovations and how are they helping your customers outside of the airline experience?
Our new Crew Classic collection comes with a built-in, yet removable compression packing organizer, which serves a dual purpose of securing and compressing clothes and accessories. It also acts as a divider in the main suitcase compartment. We've also incorporated a tapered expansion design to keep the center of gravity low while providing an

On a recent spring day, I started mildly stressing about booking my family’s Thanksgiving flights for four people traveling from San Francisco to Raleigh, North Carolina. Airfare deals have been much harder to come by in the aftermath of the pandemic due to the strong return in travel demand, so I had a feeling we needed to act fast if we were going to fly at a decent price during a popular travel period.
So far in 2024, several in-flight medical emergencies have made headlines around the world. In early January, a passenger on a Jet2 flight from Tenerife, Spain, to Manchester, England, died after being found unresponsive in the lavatory. Passengers on a Munich-bound Lufthansa flight in early February described the “absolute horror” onboard when a man began gushing “liters” of blood from his nose and mouth; the flight returned to Bangkok for an emergency landing, but the passenger died on the plane. A third incident occurred on a flight from Punta Cana to Charlotte in late February when a 41-year-old female passenger began convulsing; the flight was diverted, but she later died at a hospital.
