Gleaming gypsum crystal dunes roll as far as the eye can see at White Sands National Park. With waves towering up to 60 feet tall, the composition of the Northern Chihuahuan Desert landscape is constantly changing due to wind and weather patterns. Hardy plants like yuccas, grasses, and shrubs have evolved to survive in the shifting sands, adding texture to the spectacle of shapes and shadows that define the scenery.
This remarkable landscape is fit to be appreciated on camera, by foot, on Dunes Drive by bike, and famously on saucer sleds down the dunes. Like many national parks in the country, White Sands is remotely located and can require around an hour or more of travel time from your accommodation. The journey is well worth it, though, and these stays prove it.
Take your pick of hotels and vacation rentals. From boutique Western hotels, to gorgeous glamping domes, to a converted art gallery, we’ve selected places guaranteed to satisfy your Western adventure cravings. Below, our list of the 11 best places to stay near White Sands National Park, all less than two hours away.
We've vetted these listings based on Superhost status, ratings, amenities, location, previous guest reviews, and decor.

In every corner of Japan, there are echoes of Ghibli film settings. The country’s most successful anime studio launched in 1985, and its films have become emblematic of Japan’s offbeat, inventive character. It’s no surprise the opening of the Ghibli Park in November 2022 proved so popular. Tickets are released three months in advance but, almost a year on, they’re still like gold dust due to high domestic demand. There are no rides at the park either. Instead, it’s been designed as a place to “take a stroll, feel the wind, and discover the wonders”, according to its founders.
Some people will just never learn when it comes to interacting with wildlife.

There's a reason so many people refer to a theme park trip as a "once-in-a-lifetime vacation."
The cozy timber-frame lodge of Camp Denali bustled with morning energy just moments ago. Guests chatted with each other, lodge staff cleared the plated breakfast of pancakes with blueberries harvested from the tundra outside, and coffee mugs clinked on the long wooden tables reminiscent of dining together in someone’s home. But now the lodge is quiet. Guests have left for activities of their choosing, from guided naturalist hikes designed for a range of abilities, biking the park road, and canoeing on Wonder Lake to relaxing in their cabins and enjoying the view. It’s a good day for it; the peak of Denali, all 20,300 feet of it scraping the rare clear sky, gleams impossibly through the window like some snow-covered image of myth.
It isn’t hard to find a bit of respite from New York City’s clamor. Really.
