Bordering the Consall Nature Park, a nature reserve featuring 740 acres of woodland, heath and moor, is The Tawny, a “deconstructed hotel”. This means that instead of a single house with rooms there are a collection of boathouses, huts and treehouses scattered around the woodlands and lakes. At the top of the hill is a modern glass building, the Plumicorn restaurant, and a heated outdoor pool looking out over the gardens. Stargazing sessions and night-time meditation are on offer, while spa treatments can be booked in the thatched cottage onsite.

A Grade I-listed Georgian mansion surrounded by a parkland designed originally by Capability Brown and overlooking the River Dart, Sharpham House is the place to go if you’re ready to take your quest for tranquillity seriously. There are silent retreats, mindfulness for beginners and “burnout” retreats, too – and all guests are fed delicious vegetarian and vegan food, much of it grown organically in their walled garden.

Grade II-listed Hampton Manor is built on a sprawling estate once owned by Sir Robert Peel. While rooms are available in the house, an exquisite “immersive” culinary experience is tucked away in a small clearing: a collection of modern cabins sit beside a Michelin-starred restaurant. Through the Victorian walled garden is another restaurant and a bakery, and guests are invited to take part in weekend workshops – make your own bread and butter, or a batch of cinnamon buns. In the afternoon, as part of the daily “house rhythm”, there’s an hour of curated vinyl accompanied by cake.

In the grounds of Somerleyton estate is the Clubhouse, previously a pub called the Fritton Arms, now a pub/restaurant with rooms upstairs. Down the lane are a series of cottages and cabins. And behind the Clubhouse is Fritton Lake, with water buffalo grazing on one side and, on the other, an outdoor pool bookended by open fires, tennis courts, a wooden adventure playground that weaves through the trees, and a floating sauna. They have given 1,000 acres of land on the Norfolk/Suffolk border “back to nature”, and deer, sheep and ponies roam free while families explore the grounds on foraging safaris.

After feasting in the farm’s 150-year-old barn, amid herb gardens and twinkling lights, stroll into the forest to spend the night in the off-grid safari tent (which sleeps six) or, for an even more memorable experience, the tree tent. Suspended in the canopy of ancient oak and ash is a spherical tent, overlooking the Mendip hills, and below it a wood cabin. There are wood-burning stoves, a bathroom, a kitchen

Last year, when Micha Pycke, 40, and Albane Paret, 39, bought an apartment in Ostend — a once run-down Belgian seaside town that, in recent years, has become a favorite of artists and designers — they knew they wanted the place to be, says Pycke, “something more than an Airbnb or holiday home.” Instead, the couple, who co-own the Ghent-based arts- and design-focused communications agency Club Paradis, envisioned what he calls “a new kind of space”: essentially, a gallery where guests could stay overnight. To that end, they’ve filled the 1,000-square-foot two-bedroom, which is on the eighth floor of a ’60s-era building overlooking the North Sea, with works by some of their favorite artists and designers, many of whom are also their clients. In the living room, a lacquered wood coffee table by the Dutch designer Linde Freya Tangelder’s studio, Destroyers/Builders, sits atop a limited-edition rug by the Swiss textile artist Christoph Hefti woven with images of foxes. In one of the bedrooms, a copper-colored, ruched-felt tapestry by Rooms Studio — a women-led company from Tbilisi, Georgia — hangs above a Duo seat by the Belgian team Muller Van Severen for Valerie Objects. And if you like something, you can probably take it with you; most of the pieces are for sale, and Pycke and Paret are also happy to connect guests directly with designers. . —
The Netherlands is known for many things – sublime art, sustainability initiatives, glorious countryside – but low prices isn’t typically one of them (especially not in Amsterdam, with the capital ranking as one of Europe’s most expensive cities).
The Kayak website launched to the public in May 2004 as a pioneer in travel metasearch.
The English capital is one of the most touristed cities anywhere in the world, with nearly 19 million arrivals in 2023—but when is the best time to visit London? While many choose to travel here during the summer to make the most of the many of the destination's parks, rooftop bars, and outdoor activities, all four seasons have something unique to offer for the traveler heading to London. Below, we break down when to visit for the best weather, the best rates, and more.
It’s a noise the former railway tunnel probably hadn’t heard in a while. Somewhere in the dark is a hooting part-owl, part-forlorn steam train. My sister Ele has stopped on her bike to blow determinedly across her cupped hands like a flute. As she recreates this long-gone sound, I pedal on through the cool, damp air. Water drips steadily from the stalactite-coated brickwork as my front light illuminates pedestrians and their dogs looming from the echoing shadows.
Airbnb execs have used the phrase “expanding beyond the core” to mean launching new products and services for guests and hosts, and also their hope to lift growth beyond the company’s main five markets: The U.S., Canada, UK, Australia, and France.
For many of the world’s most famous mountain destinations, springtime can often be—for a lack of a better word—a dud. Snow is melting so skiing is no longer as exciting an option, but thawing mountains naturally leave a muddy trail in its wake, making activities like hiking more challenging, too. That’s why this two-ish-month springtime period is called: mud season. But not all mountain locales are made the same. Take the largest ski resort in North America: Whistler, British Columbia. In a lot of ways, unless you’re just begging for as much snow as possible to accommodate non-stop skiing, spring is a great time to be in this hilly hamlet tucked away in western Canada’s Coast Mountain range.
Settling yourself for a week or a weekend on a car-free island can come with unexpected benefits: the joy of getting around via bicycle, the conversations that happen while walking from one place to another, the hilarity of golfcart transportation. But while we all love a good road trip, sometimes the car is just a means to getting from point a to point b. On these islands, even the getting around is part of the fun. Not to mention its stress-free and incredibly freeing for everyone coming along on the trip.
