Palm Beach is hot and is making its mark on the art scene. With the constant trickle of millionaires and billionaires moving to the area, the desire to build a robust art community is greater than ever, and gallerist Sarah Gavlak is among those leading the charge.
Back in December, just as the art world was gearing up for the exhibitions, events, and parties of Art Basel Miami Beach 2023, a very different type of art fair was taking place just a stone’s throw away in the Palm Beaches – New Wave Art Wknd. Founded in 2018 by Gavlak (whose Gavlak Gallery was the first contemporary art gallery in Palm Beach when it opened in 2005) and boasting an advisory board that includes prominent curators, collectors, philanthropists, and artists, New Wave is a nonprofit with a mission to engage and inspire the Palm Beaches community and beyond by fostering critical dialogue around diversity and inclusion through public programs and residencies in support of local, national, and international underrepresented artists.
The organization uses its New Wave Art Wknd to facilitate relationships between collectors and artists, and the fair’s Patron Program serves as its main fundraiser for its year-round educational series and artist residency initiative. New Wave trades in some of the glitz and hoopla of Art Basel for an art weekend tailored more for art purists, showcasing the region’s flourishing contemporary art scene with a 3-day schedule packed with curated panel discussions, private collection visits, gallery hops, open studios, dining experiences, and more - all with a philanthropic purpose. Scheduled quite shrewdly for the weekend immediately preceding Miami Art Week, this year’s event marked the 5th anniversary of New Wave Art Wknd.
The theme of this year’s fair was The Freedom of Expression. Gavlak selected the theme, “because I feel this is one of the most pressing issues facing not just artists, curators, writers, and museum directors but all of us in our day-to-day lives. One of my missions for New Wave is to bring individuals from all backgrounds together, who may have opposing points of view, while maintaining an atmosphere that allows dialogue, expression, and ideas to be exchanged, especially through various panel discussions, gallery walks, exhibition tours, etc. This concept is something I’ve pushed to foster not just during New Wave Art Wknd but throughout our residency and year-round programming.”
As part of the program artists receive an unrestricted $5,000 stipend from New Wave in addition to use of an apartment and studio space in downtown West Palm Beach for up to eight weeks, provided by the organization’s lead residency partner, Related Companies. New Wave’s Artist-in-Residence Program has so far

When we talk about traveling to upstate New York, with its fall foliage and shimmering lakes, the land above and beyond New York City is never called what it was known as for a thousand years—the homeland of the Haudenosaunee, ‘the people of the longhouse.’ The Haudenosaunee were a confederation of five (and later six) nations known to colonizers as “the Iroquois Confederacy"—the Mohawk, Seneca, Onondaga, Cayuga, Oneida, and Tuscarora—who lost much of their land after the Revolutionary War.
