Luxury publisher Assouline has released a new book titled "Morocco, Kingdom of Light", aiming to highlight Morocco's cultural richness and support the country's recovery following last year’s earthquakes.
It offers readers a chance to explore Morocco's beautiful cities and their traditional crafts, potentially encouraging tourism which is crucial for the local economy at this time.
This book reflects the sentiments of artist Mehdi Qotbi, who sees Morocco as a celebration of light, color, and community. It's designed to take readers on a tour across Morocco, from the lively streets of Marrakech to the serene Atlas Mountains.
Photographer Oliver Pilcher captures the essence of these locations, and the coffee table book is further enriched by the contributions of Ariel Wizman, a Moroccan-born writer and musician, who provides insightful commentary on the country's history and culture.
Alongside "Morocco, Kingdom of Light", Assouline has also recently published "Moroccan Decorative Arts" by Philippe Saharoff. This work, developed over three years, showcases Morocco's diverse arts and crafts, from Marrakech's leatherwork to Essaouira's woodwork.
It includes a range of Moroccan art forms like zellige, pottery, and metalwork, and features pieces from King Mohammed VI's collection, making it a comprehensive resource on Moroccan craftsmanship.
These publications aim to do more than just display Morocco's beauty and culture. They seek to encourage international visitors to explore Morocco, which can help in the economic recovery process following the earthquake. By showcasing the country's diverse cultural heritage, Assouline hopes to inspire travel and engagement with local artisans.
These works are not just about sharing the story of Morocco but are part of a larger effort to support the nation in a challenging time. They illustrate the country's artistic and historical richness, inviting readers to discover and contribute to Morocco's vibrant culture and economy.
