San Francisco International Airport has advised passengers to expect delays over the next several months as a planned runway closure goes into effect.
Starting Jan. 16, the airport will close Runway 28 Left for five months so officials can complete a taxiway improvement project, according to the airport. That closure is expected to be in effect until the summer, but will reopen no later than July 1 “in advance of the Independence Day weekend and peak summer travel season.”
“Because the closure will reduce the Airport’s overall runway capacity, SFO advises travelers that delays are possible during the closure period,” the airport wrote in a statement. “SFO is working with airlines and the FAA to adjust flight schedules to minimize delays.”
In total, about one third of flights — both international and domestic — may experience delays of 30 to 60 minutes, according to the airport. That will last from January through April and be especially true during peak times.
The airport said airlines were “currently reviewing schedule adjustments during the final months of May and June.”
The project, which will cost about $55 million, is intended to make it easier for planes to exit the runways after landing. Officials say this will “improve safety and bring the layout of the taxiways up to the latest standards.”
Flight delays are never fun, but there are things travelers can do to minimize the stress that inevitably comes with them. Travelers can check the status of their flight ahead of time thanks to a variety of apps and websites, and should know their rights if something does go wrong.
Travelers who miss a connecting flight can check the airline’s app to see if they can rebook themselves on the next flight as well as get on the phone with customer service (which may be quicker than a crowded airport help desk).
