After supporting roles on shows ranging from ‘Russian Doll’ to ‘Girls’ and ‘Inside Amy Schumer’ actress Greta Lee finally stepped into the spotlight with her starring role in the film ‘Past Lives’ — for which she received her first Best Actress nomination from the Golden Globes. I spoke with Lee about her love of Champagne, her need for ritual and what it’s like to drink with one of the stars from ‘Absolutely Fabulous.’
What was your first drink?
My first drink ever was a Budweiser from my dad. (Laughs) And I immediately spit it out! This was a nearly nightly ritual for my dad. He’d come home from work, crack open a beer and would offer a sip to me and my siblings, making a joke about stirring in some sugar to make it more appealing.
How did you celebrate getting your first Golden Globe nomination?
Oh my gosh! On that day I had a gin martini. I like a 50/50 martini with both an olive and a twist as a garnish. And I like it wet. Having lived in New York for almost two decades I'm a real martini person.
How did you discover your love of Champagne?
I always find myself looking for ritual. It’s grounding for me in this crazy life and this very hectic business that I’m in. Champagne as a way to start a meal or mark an occasion — it’s really a thing that I do. I love the effervescence. I love the physical feeling of having a glass of champagne.
Did you enjoy some champagne at the Golden Globes?
Oh yeah! (Laughs) I have to say, that was such a special day for me. Talk about ritual and making things like a ceremony — it was even more of a priority for me that day. You have these big moments in your life that you want to savor ever bit of because the Golden Globes! So to find myself nominated — that’s a total dream come true. A dream that I had not been expecting in my life. I was having some Moët & Chandon in our beautiful hotel suite to mark the occasion. And taking a moment to stop and breathe and have a toast was really so wonderful.
You’ve worked with some very impressive people. Is there someone memorable that you met at The Golden Globes for the first time?
What is so nice about the awards cycle and all the events — it feels like you’re at camp and you're getting to know this collective group of people because you're always seeing each other around. (Laughs) And those people just happen to be Emma Stone and Billie Eilish!
That night in particular I met Nicholas Cage, who I had been dying to meet for so long. ‘Face/Off’ was a movie I loved as a kid and I love that kind of very athletic, masculine performance. I was standing in line at the red carpet and I turned to my left and there was Nicholas Cage. That was completely surreal. We took a photo together where you can tell that I'm having an

Whitening. Herbal. Charcoal. Color changing? I'm in the toothpaste aisle at Target, dumbfounded by a selection that runs several shelves long and as many high. After more than 20 years in Cuba, where Close-Up and La Perla were the only choices for most of that time, I'm overwhelmed by the number of options. If Target triggers paralysis, I shudder to think what terror Costco might elicit.
Art in hotels, both to admire and to purchase, has become a strong focus in recent years. The Fife Arms in the Scottish Highlands has an impressive art collection including a giant Louise Bourgeois spider in the courtyard, 45 Park Lane in London has regularly changing exhibitions and art tours, Claridges has its own gallery with regularly changing shows, while La Residencia in Mallorca, Spain has 33 original pieces on display by Joan Miró. The luxurious Hotel Savoy, in Florence, is another hotel that takes art seriously by creating suites for artists to stay in and through hosting regular exhibitions in its public spaces.
These days, there’s no need to visit a museum to see otherworldly art when you’re on vacation. Many of the nation’s top hotels are dabbling in the illustrious world of collecting themselves. It’s not unusual for a boutique hotel to partner with a local gallery to display a rotating array of pieces or for a property to commission new works to unveil in its lobby or garden.
