An air of romance hangs over the Cameron House, a luxurious Scottish resort that’s both steeped in history and blessed with a glorious location. Snuggled along the southern banks of scenic Loch Lomond where puffy clouds and broad rays of sunlight paint the placid waters, the Cameron House with its centuries-old manse as its centerpiece has long played host to both royalty and prime ministers alike. Bedecked with turrets and gables and ensconced within Trossachs National Park, this now restored and renovated structure and the surrounding 400 bucolic acres are suffused with a magical quality that easily seduces all her guests who drop in, whether for a short, or even better, a long visit.
Though guests will find plenty of toys that appeal to thrill seekers, including off-roading, a speed boat trip on the loch, and a private seaplane adventure, perhaps it’s the more tranquil activities—strolling and hiking along sometimes narrow paths through woodlands, meadows and gardens—that provide the most intimate connection with this property. And, it’s this verdancy that’s home to an array of flora and fauna that the Cameron House’s conservation efforts aim to protect.
The resort is dedicated to preserving the landscape, and all the creatures and other living things that grow and dwell there. That’s why they have a conservation team that fosters sustainability. The many initiatives include helping improve the declining bee population by growing bee-friendly flowers, not using insecticides, and planting three trees for every tree that’s lost.
Here are some of the many captivating, low-key venues for pedestrian-based activities on the property or not so far away that are sure to wrap you up in this pastoral setting.
Formerly an unused scrubland, this was developed into a sanctuary for wildlife, and one with a fantastical quality that’s sure to especially delight families. Wander around and you may notice a wee crimson-colored door set into a tree stump, and a cluster of petite fairy houses, each bearing roofs resembling colorful butterfly wings. There are plenty of other sensory delights, whether it's the fragrance of flowers and aromatic herbs, the sound of birds warbling, or the sight of butterflies flitting about. The idea behind this nature-based haven is to offer guests insights into the flora and fauna that are abundant around Loch Lomond. You’ll likely see bees that are attracted to the nectar that they feed on, as well as frogs and their tadpoles in the pond.
Another disused parcel of land has grown into a wild meadow dappled with an array of wildflowers. Again, bees, other insects, and birds all benefit from the array of flowers that bear a cornucopia of delightful hues. Among the specimens you may see are
