The Olivier Award winning new production of Cabaret, Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, a transfer from London's West End, is projected to be one of the hottest shows on Broadway when it opens in April. What that means: getting tickets is not going to be easy but one of the best ways to achieve that could be through the Broadway VIP Experience also launching that month at the Mandarin Oriental, New York. With a two night stay, this promotion includes two prime orchestra seats, a meet and greet with a starring cast member at the MO Lounge and a special gift from the show to take home.
Other options can be added on including a Mercedes S-Class for transfers to and from the theater, a backstage tour, a VIP guided tour of the Museum of Broadway, a private concert by Broadway performers and for those who fantasize about appearing on Broadway: a private singing, dancing or acting lesson from a Broadway professional in a midtown rehearsal studio. And if they’ve somehow already seen Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, other choices include Wicked, Hamilton, SIX, Hadestown, The Lion King, Aladdin, MJ the Musical and Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
Linking to Broadway is a productive idea for hotels since the shows of the Great White Way have traditionally been one of the prime draws for New York City tourism and seem to be again after a gradual recovery from the pandemic shutdown. “We’re seeing more interest than ever,” according to Nathaniel Hill, Founder and President of Broadway Plus, the company that coordinates the Broadway ticket program and behind the scenes extra activities for many of the hotels. “Tourism has come back to 98% of 2019’s benchmark so it feels to me that we’re there. People are seeing more shows than ever.”
That doesn’t mean that all shows are having a banner year, of course, as reflected by early closing notices of several over this season. Newer shows are having a more challenging time, Hill says, unless they get stellar reviews or have a star within the ranks like the darkly comic family drama Appropriate (with Sarah Paulson) or The Notebook, which comes into town with rapturous reviews from its previous production in Chicago. Audiences during the week are down, according to Hill, because of hybrid work bringing fewer suburbanites into town on a weeknight. But popular shows such as Hamilton, Six and MJ the Musical are holding their own. And 18 more will open before the Tony Awards cutoff date of April 25th. (The new openings that Hill is most excited about: Suffs, a musical about the women’s suffragist movement that counts Hillary Clinton and Malala Yousafzai as producers; Stereophonic, a musical about an up and coming rock band recording an album and Alicia Keys’ Hell’s Kitchen.)

On a Tuesday evening last December, the singer-pianist Michael Feinstein was at Café Carlyle on Manhattan’s Upper East Side in a sparkly silver blazer, making his way through the audience to the little stage, wherethe members of his four-piece band were taking their places. The audience erupted into applause. A few people stood and reached out a hand to greet him. As he launched into George and Ira Gershwin’s “Our Love Is Here to Stay,” some sang along, others swayed a little. Written in 1937, the American songbook standard is full of nostalgia, wit and romance. The same might be said for Café Carlyle.
