HomeToGo has found that Schweitzer Mountain, ID is ranked as the top ski destination overall for 2023/24 offering excellent snow conditions, affordability, lift capacity and plenty of ski terrain to explore. Boasting 2,900 acres of snow-draped terrain, Schweitzer Mountain dazzles with its remarkable skiing options. Nestled snugly in the snowy embrace of the Selkirk Mountains in the northern Idaho panhandle, skiers can savor the chillingly beautiful views of three states, Canada and the glistening Lake Pend Oreille.
“Schweitzer has made its way on to several national lists in the past few seasons and for good reasons,” says Taylor Prather, Marketing & PR at Schweitzer Mountain. “The resort’s ease of access from Spokane International Airport, expansive terrain offering and charm of its North Idaho mountain community are all reasons skiers and snowboarders love Schweitzer. Plus, the resort has been investing and upgrading its experiences to a tune of $50 million over the past five years with new slopeside lodging offerings and on-mountain enhancements. It’s the perfect time to welcome mountain adventurers to Schweitzer for the very first time, and the HomeToGo rating is yet another open invitation to visit.”
Rounding out the top five overall ski resorts are: Park City, UT; Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia, Canada; Mount Baker, WA; Palisades Tahoe, CA.
"With the warm days of summer behind us, many travelers are starting to set their sights on snowy winter getaways," said Mike Pearce, of HomeToGo. “Crafting a successful ski trip today presents a challenge, considering factors like cost, weather conditions and estimated time on the slopes, so we have expanded this year's report to encompass aspects such as average snow depth and slope count to ensure travel planning is even more seamless for skiers looking to maximize their holidays this year.”

When the British took to skiing in the early 1900s, we did so with competitive verve, organising clubs and amateur races that still draw big crowds today. The Inferno, held in the elegantly understated Swiss town of Murren, celebrates its 80th event in 2024, and constitutes the biggest public ski race in the world. It’s utter madness, involving 1,850 entrants racing over the nine-mile run, which drops from Schilthorn, at almost 2,970 metres, down to 790 metres, taking an average skier 20 minutes (the winner considerably less).
As options for the traditional chalet ski break have dwindled and prices risen, venturing to Europe’s far corners and beyond for a ski break can reap rewards. Costs are often lower, while luxury accommodation can be similarly priced to budget options in mainstream European ski resorts. As well as being potentially cheaper, skiing in territory off the beaten track can offer a rich cultural experience, plus better flight routes, less crowded slopes, sunnier days and a friendlier welcome.

There are only two peaks in the Alps higher than Mount Erciyes — Mont Blanc and the Dufourspitze — but I hadn’t heard of this mighty Anatolian mountain until I was presented with the opportunity to ski its slopes. At 3,917 metres, it only ranks as Turkey’s fifth-highest mountain, but the dormant volcano lends its name to the country’s largest ski resort and it offers a very different experience to skiing in the Alps.
The Canary Islands welcomes approximately 450,000 LGBTQ+ tourists annually, representing 2.7% of the total tourists to the islands. This accounts for over 5.4% of the tourism revenue and generated a turnover of €960 million in 2022.
By far the favourite European ski destination, France consistently welcomes around a third of British skiers who are drawn by the convenience of a winter sports break in our near-neighbour country.
