There are few places in the French Alps quite as iconic as this grande dame. Perched atop the village of Courchevel at more than 6,000 feet, Les Airelles is set against a backdrop of snow-dusted pine trees and wooden chalets right at the foot of the Jardin Alpin ski slopes. With its Austro-Hungarian palace style turrets and hand-painted frescoes, it has been the go-to spot for guests looking for a stand-out Alpine escape since local businesswoman Raymonde Fenestraz created it in 1900.
At its core, is the stellar service and sense that anything is possible here, drawing the most demanding of guests from all over the world. As well as several restaurants, a La Mer spa, kids' club (including a games arcade and home cinema), a slick Bernard Orcel boot room, and even a Jacquemus ice rink, there are plenty of opportunities for winter sports, from husky dog sledding to Nordic skiing across the 3 Valleys, which, with over 400 miles of runs, is the largest ski area in the world. Adding to the list of offerings, Les Airelles guests now get to roll out of bed to baskets of French pastry maestro Cedric Grolet’s freshly baked buttery croissants and numerous other delights, that draw die-hard fans from across the world in droves to his flagship store in the French capital.

“Produce is crucial to me,” Cedric Grolet explains when we sit down together in a nook at the back of Les Airelles’ breakfast room, one sunny morning. “I know what goes into each and every one of my pastries, and I won't make concessions. I'd rather stop making something if I can't get the ingredients.”
In fact, he is so adamant about quality, that he’s taken his sought-after croissants off the click-and-collect menu of his shops to avoid serving croissants that are no longer fresh. “People would show little respect for the croissants. They would order them in the morning and collect them only in the afternoon. You can’t expect freshly baked croissants to still be perfect hours later. So now if you want a croissant, you have to go into the shop and get one, and eat it right away.”
What could a pastry chef from Auvergne in Central France, who made a name for himself at a top Paris hotel — and on Instagram where he has over 9 million followers (that’s a little over the entire population of New York) who love his highly watchable cake-making video content — have to do with the French

Every year, The Economist publishes a list of the most expensive cities in the world, and the 2023 rankings are in. To determine which metropolises will snag a spot, the publication looks at the cost of living index, which compares prices of hundreds of products and services in 172 cities around the globe. In the smash new Broadway show Gutenberg! The Musical!, actor Josh Gad reteams with Andrew Rannells, with whom he had undeniable chemistry on stage a decade ago in The Book of Mormon. So where would they travel together, if given the chance? “We would have to go to Uganda,” Gad laughs, referring to their Mormon characters’ journey to eastern Africa. “You’d see how similar we are in real life to Elder Cunningham and Elder Price. It would potentially be both disastrous and life-changing—actually, a great documentary!”
