The idea of a “meal fit for a king or queen” gets plenty of lip service among those with no experience eating food served in a castle, or presiding over a monarchy. Taken literally, what would be the perfect royal meal for luxury food tourists searching the globe for a unique experience?
One Japanese chef, Tomoya Kawada, appears to have nailed it. Halekulani Okinawa, a luxury resort in Okinawa Prefecture, is partnering with Dining Out on a “three-night exclusive gastronomic experience at UNESCO World Heritage site”—the famed Shuri Castle.
For three nights (Feb. 10-12), Kawada will prepare an unparalleled dining experience inspired by traditional rituals and royal cuisine offered by the King of the historic Ryukyu Kingdom for “Sapposhi”—the Chinese envoys sent by the emperor at the coronation ceremony for the king. The pairing of chef and venue is perfect: Kawada's restaurant, Sazenka, is the only Chinese restaurant with three Michelin stars outside the Chinese-speaking world.
The Shuri Castle served as the home office for Ryukyu kings from the 15th century until Okinawa became a Japanese prefecture in 1879. Today it stands as one of the UNESCO World Heritage designated castles of the Ryukyu Kingdom sites. It’s still undergoing renovations as a result of a devastating 2019 fire, so the event will be held outdoors. The castle grounds offer a picturesque setting that exists nowhere else in the world.
The entire experience leans into the grandiosity of the meal, the castle, and the hotel. It’s available exclusively to guests of Halekulani Okinawa. One of the 25 tickets each night guarantees a one-night stay in a luxury suite, transportation to and from the dinner (45 minutes each way), as well as dinner.
Exact prices will vary based on the current exchange rate, but the estimated total cost of this package ranges from $3,280 to $6,095 depending on the size of your suite. Tickets are also available to guests staying at Halekulani Okinawa for $2,776 per person, inclusive of transportation to and from the castle.
Guests of the Halekulani Okinawa who come for the dinner can extend their stay as needed, and enjoy the luxury of a 5-star property in the village of Onna beyond the night of their meal. To attend the dinner, guests must be 13 or older.
“We are immensely honored to partner with Dining Out and introduce Okinawa’s unique culinary offerings and magnificent culture to our discerning guests,” said Jun Yoshie, the General Manager of Halekulani Okinawa. “Our mission is to integrate the local culinary and cultural heritage into every aspect of the guest experience.”
The dinner experience includes a historical reenactment of the Ryukyu Kingdom. This is not atypical of the “Dining Out” event series, where
