Standing proudly as a B Corp organization, Luxury Cottages represents over 300 lavish properties dotted across the UK, from the coastlines of Cornwall to the rolling hills and narrow winding lanes of the Cotswolds.
I sat down with its CEO and Founder, Alistair Malins, to reflect on his journey from attending one of the world's leading universities to creating a portfolio of some of the finest boltholes in Britain.
Born in Birmingham, Alistair spent most of his childhood in Solihull, home of the Land Rover, while attending King Edward's School in Edgbaston.
During his childhood, he spent his summer holidays visiting Port Isaac, a tiny fishing village on the Atlantic coast of north Cornwall, and Tuckenhay, a quaint hamlet in the South Hams of Devon, for the autumn.
"We used to go to a pub just down the road called The Maltsters Arms, on the banks of the River Dart, and it was actually owned by celebrity chef Keith Floyd.
My sister said she didn't like anything on the menu, so he had to improvise!" Alistair chuckles.
Alistair later studied Geography at the world-renowned University of Oxford.
"At university, I studied climatology and desertification, which is where I first became interested in environmental issues," says Alistair.
After graduating, Alistair took a gap year and decided to become a lawyer. So he returned to Oxford to study law at Oxford Brookes University before joining the London law firm Slaughter and May as an associate.
"I didn't really feel that law was my calling in life, so I moved into investment banking and worked in corporate finance at Merrill Lynch.
It gave me an excellent grounding in real estate deals and the hotel industry." says Alistair.
While brands like ASOS started to grow, Alistair began working more on tech businesses and joined Black Tomato, a luxury travel company.
"I'd always wanted to work for a start-up! It was the first time I saw what working for a luxury travel company was like, and I absolutely loved it.
I knew I wanted to set up my own company in time, so I decided to go back into banking for a couple of years to finance it," says Alistair.
In 2015, while serving as a Vice President at a venture capital fund at The Raine Group, Alistair dreamt up his first business, a fund to acquire properties and lease them out as short-term rentals.
"I realized very quickly that it was a hard business to scale without significant funding, and at the same time, I had the idea for Luxury Cottages—actually coming from many of the issues we had with running our own properties," says Alistair.
Alistair was shortly introduced to Michelle Sephton, the former managing director at Elegant Resorts. Along with Anthony Challinor-Cole, Sephton would become one of the future

I consider myself an adventurous person. I’ve overlanded through Russia. Traveled solo in Egypt. Followed the Dakar Rally through Saudi Arabia. But it was my recent experience getting to the Dukha people, Mongolia’s reindeer-riding tribe, that I consider one of the most adventurous experiences to date. Not just because of how remote the tribe is, but because we were also contenting with -30C temperatures, unusually heavy snowfall, and incredibly hard to navigate terrain.
