In the culinary world, the Michelin Guide stands as an unparalleled authority, capable of making or breaking chefs and establishments. Beyond the public gaze, within the hallowed confines of kitchens, dedicated brigades pour countless hours into their craft, their aspirations and ambitions tethered to the shimmering stars that the guide bestows - an emblem of culinary prestige that elevates the ordinary to the extraordinary.
For more than 123 years, Michelin has guided discerning diners to gastronomic destinations that consistently rise above the ordinary. But now, in a daring move that harmonizes with its storied culinary expertise, the Michelin Guide is expanding its discerning purview into the world of hotels.
Last week, the Michelin Guide made a groundbreaking announcement: it has launched a snazzy hotel booking platform following its acquisition of Tablet Hotels in 2018, and is embarking on a venture to rank hotels all over the world. And from 2024, it will reward the crème de la crème of their curation with not a star, but a key.
Just like for its restaurants, the selection criteria is going to be tough. In this new venture, the Michelin Guide doesn't merely seek to find us a place to rest our heads. It aims to redefine our notion of hospitality. It's not just about a comfortable bed; it's about an unforgettable experience. So, fasten your seat belts, as the prestigious guide is about to rattle the industry once again.
A team of 25 hotel inspectors, who have been meticulously trained in the Michelin art for two years, have curated a selection of over 5,000 hotels and accommodations spanning 120 countries, which now live on the new Michelin Hotels site. “The hotel selection on our platform is a tight curation of the best places to stay in the world, ranked by our inspectors,” says Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of Michelin Guides. “The fact that we pay our way for every hotel review, just like for our restaurant reviews, means we remain completely independent and trustworthy. We’re working for our customers: the traveler.”
In an industry increasingly saturated with information and hotels that offer very little personality, the Michelin Key might be the beacon of authenticity and individuality that’s been missing to bring the might back to what really matters in hospitality. “We want to shine a light on the talent out there, the devotion to excellence and authenticity, the service, the sense of place,” Poullennec explains. “Did you know, for instance, that the average traveler takes at least 10 hours, browsing 10 different platforms to organize a holiday? The idea is to really help them make an efficient and informed decision.”
In fact, ranking the hotels is a selection process based

Few cities are as naturally spectacular as Rio. Flanked by the Atlantic and Guanabara Bay, backed by jungle-furred peaks and strung together with miles of creamy sand, this is a place of singular beauty. The beachside neighbourhoods are the obvious areas to stay: legendary Copacabana, quieter Leme and trendier Ipanema, the gateway to Rio’s western beaches. Don’t write off inland, though — over the past decade, a new, boutique-style hotel scene has emerged. High above the historic centre, Santa Teresa is Rio’s boho bastion. Directly below is nightlife-central Lapa.

While the current prices of airline tickets are down from their peak earlier this year—thanks to pent-up travel demand being released and more flights being added—they likely won’t stay that way for long. The holidays are coming and, with them, an increase in flight prices.
