A new rule that will make automatic emergency braking systems (AEB) mandatory, including those that detect pedestrians, was finalized.
Starting in September, 2029, vehicle manufacturers must make the technology standard rather than a luxury, on all passenger cars and light trucks.
The safety regulation is expected to address the crisis of deaths on the nation’s roads by significantly reducing rear-end and pedestrian crashes, saving lives and significantly reducing injury or property damage and associated costs from these crashes.
The news was announced on Monday by the Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
“The new vehicle safety standards we finalized today will save hundreds of lives and prevent tens of thousands of injuries every year,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, said in a statement. “The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is not only making historic investments in transportation, it’s also ushering in a new era of safer travel by ensuring new cars and light trucks are equipped with automatic emergency braking, making our roads safer for drivers and pedestrians alike.”
Automatic emergency braking technology uses sensors to detect when a vehicle is close to crashing into another vehicle or pedestrian in front. A system will automatically apply the brakes if the driver has not.
The new standard requires all cars be able to stop and avoid contact with a vehicle in front up to 62 miles per hour, and that the systems must be able to detect pedestrians in both daylight and darkness. In addition, the system must apply the brakes automatically up to 90 mph when a collision with a lead vehicle is imminent, and up to 45 mph when a pedestrian is detected.
“Automatic emergency braking is proven to save lives and reduce serious injuries from frontal crashes, and this technology is now mature enough to require it in all new cars and light trucks,” Sophie Shulman, NHTSA’s deputy administrator, said in a statement. “In fact, this technology is now so advanced that we’re requiring these systems to be even more effective at higher speeds and to detect pedestrians. Most new vehicles already come with AEB, and we expect that many cars and light trucks will be able to meet this standard ahead of the deadline, meaning even more lives will be saved thanks to this technology.”
The final rule applies to nearly all U.S. light vehicles (weighing about 10,000 pounds or less).
A separate rule that would require heavy vehicles, including tractor trailers, to have AEB was proposed by NHTSA and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and is in the process of being finalized.
Conservative estimates based on federal data indicate that the new regulation could save

President Joe Biden signed the 2024 FAA Reauthorization Act into law on Thursday. The law provides funding for the Federal Aviation Administration for the next five years and addresses various aspects of air travel related to consumer protections, investments in air traffic control staffing and much more.
Nearly 700,000 deaths and serious injuries will have been prevented in 74 countries from January 2016 through the end of 2024 from improvements to road infrastructure and the implementation of safer speeds. By 2044, the number of fatalities and serious injuries is projected to be almost 3.2 million.
