"The energy is shifting. Can you feel it?” It is a cloudy Sunday afternoon in Highland Park. A perfect day to hear about ghosts.
This neighborhood in Northeast LA is known for its early-1900s Arts and Crafts homes and varieties of cashew-milk lattes. Highland Park fell into disrepair and gang violence by the '90s, but over the last 20 years it has been rediscovered and revitalized by the city's creative class. People like Danielle Thomsen, who's telling me about the ghosts in the store.
A shoebox diorama of a shop, Pattyes Closet II is filled with vintage Levi's, draggy caftans, old photos, terrifying dolls, and costume jewelry. The store is around the corner from Rosie Bunny Bean (a pet supply shop that sells whole frozen duck necks for your dog), a vegan soft-serve joint, the wonderful Taiwanese restaurant Joy, at least four coffee shops, and a delightfully bizarre marionette theater. A Corvette vrooms past, blaring a Bruce Hornsby song.

I spot a series of paintings of young women from the early days of Los Angeles, not long after 44 settlers founded the city in 1781. The women are in witchy Stevie Nicks lace. “Sometimes I come in and their eyes are closed,” she says. The eyes on the canvas? “Oh, everything in here is haunted,” she says flatly. “It's Los Angeles. There are spirits everywhere. That's why you have to believe in something. Otherwise, you're untethered, and they take you away.” She pauses, “Did you just show up here, or were you invited?”
Angelenos believe in their town above all else. But today finds LA in flux. The city vaulted to the sixth most expensive in the world, while the unhoused population increased 9 percent last year. The entertainment industry just climbed out of a paralyzing writer's strike. The big four streamers, Netflix, Amazon, Apple, and Disney, continue to reimagine (or, depending who you ask, disrupt) the whole damn place. Parties are finally back in full swing. And yet—or perhaps because of all this—there's a certain amount of celebration of the past. This town has always known how to tell a good story, and right now the best story it has is its own.
“The best things in Los Angeles right now build on what's already here,” says Jamie Lee Curtis. She pronounces the Los with a long o. The Oscar winner, who has been enjoying what Angelenos like to call a third act, grew up “in then very unfancy Beverly Hills” and is a tireless cheerleader (her word) for her hometown. And right this second she's cheering for a local cuisine that she calls “basic.”

Airline network planners may have taken an extended holiday break in January, but they were back in full force this month.
One thing about Los Angeles is no two neighborhoods are the same. The dynamic mix of cultures, lifestyles, and atmospheres allows each area to carry its own unique essence and vibrancy. From the bustling up-all-night energy (and best barbeque) of Koreatown to the glitz and glamor of Hollywood – a mere 10 minutes away. While Venice is home to bohemian charm, the artistic heartbeat of Silver Lake and the cultural richness of Pasadena couldn’t be anything different.
If you’re not familiar with the famous Halekulani Hotel in Waikiki, let me tell you about “House Befitting Heaven.” The luxurious Hawaii resort has won prestigious awards too numerous to mention – and is iconic for a lot of things – but let me tell you about the popovers. I stayed at the famous hotel more than 25 years ago – and I’m still thinking about the yummy breakfast popovers, which have been served there to guests for more than 100 years. They are simply made with flour, eggs, salt, milk, and served with poha berry jam (a type of orange gooseberry). And let me tell you – they are super delicious.
WHEN I WAS growing up in Stockton, Calif., in the 1970s and ’80s, there were only two special-occasion restaurants acceptable to my family. They were both on the south side of the city, in the barrio. My Mexican-born liked Mi Ranchito, and for my dad it was Arroyo’s Cafe. No matter which one we went to, my order was always the same: rib steak ranchero with rice, refried beans and leaves of undressed iceberg lettuce wilted by soupy salsa. I’d pinch torn pieces of machine-pressed flour tortillas around the slices of steak and mix in all the sides. It was a celebratory meal if there ever was one.
Chances are, if you've spent any time on TikTok, have a vague interest in health foods, have watched season two of "You," or have a working knowledge of Los Angeles culture and Hailey Bieber, you've heard of Erewhon.
