As a seasoned travel and adventure writer who has soared solo all over the planet, I’ve learned a few things about what makes a journey truly extraordinary. It’s a bit like entering into a social experiment over and over. What will it be like if I join X group in X country doing X activity with X assemblages of people? Flip it, change it—what’s it like now? What I’ve gleaned is that the perspective, confidence, and positivity of individuals matters; attitudes—good or bad—are contagious; experiences aren’t nearly as meaningful unless they’re shared; and a guide who sets the tone for the group of strangers with enthusiasm, encouragement, and inclusiveness is everything.
Liam Fahy, an easy-to-be-with professional guide with Wilderness Ireland, has the ineffaceable ability to unify folks across generations, genders, and geographies. Whether he’s surprising adventurers halfway through their nature romp with indulgent hot pour-over coffee, reciting Keats poems while a waterfall thunders into a tea-colored pool behind him, or pausing to chat about the history or topography of an expanse so that measured ramblers can catch up with the others on the trail, this affable leader knows unerringly what he’s doing.

I love the subtle changes of Ireland's plants and wildlife as the year follows its cycle of decay and rebirth.”
The poetic beauty of The Burren, and other diverse landscapes around western Ireland like Killarney National Park, Beara Peninsula, and the Cliffs of Moher, makes me so joyful that, more than once, I feel like crying. Is it rapacious to be this happy for so many nature-filled days in a row?
Exploring these wild places through the verdant Emerald Isle, with an incredible group of travelers—new pals, was made better with Liam at the helm. His love for wild spaces and the outdoors is palpable.
“Adventure tourism is relatively new to Ireland and in some ways, we are not yet as well serviced in terms of well marked walking trails and other facilities one might find in other places,” Liam says. “However,

It’s a country pub in a city. That’s my thinking as bartender Michael O’Donovan lets my pint of Murphy’s settle on the counter, pausing for an intuitive amount of time before topping off the stout’s creamy crown. There are licks of flame in a tiled fireplace nearby. The wood spits and crackles as the conversation eases into gear.
If you stand still long enough, Costa Rica’s flora and fauna has a way of making you feel like it’s closing in, threatening to drag you into the dense vegetation’s fold. It’s difficult to not linger when you see a busy chain of leafcutter ants crossing the trail or when you marvel at an ecosystem bursting with trees and vascular plants like angel’s trumpets, lipsticktrees, or—my favorite—wild sensitive plants, with leaves that curl and close when touched.
