Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is warning American Airlines passengers to show up extra early for their flights as construction snags lead to crowds.
Travelers are “strongly advised” to arrive at the airport two and a half hours ahead of domestic flights and three and a half hours ahead of international flights. The extra wait times comes after the airport relocated American ticket counters as part of a Terminal Lobby Expansion project.
Typically, most airlines recommend arriving at the airport two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight.
“The Airport and American Airlines will deploy extra staff and additional signage to direct travelers curbside and in the lobby,” CLT wrote in a statement, adding, “The Airport appreciates travelers’ patience during this time.”
The relocation of the American check-in desks will last through July 21. Until then, all American ticket counters between Checkpoint C and Checkpoint E are closed. American’s self-service kiosks in the lobby and the American bag drop location are not affected.
A representative for American did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Travel + Leisure.
During the relocation, travelers can find American check-in desks outside door 2. There are also mobile podiums available and travelers may use other airlines’ ticket counters when available.
CLT is one of the busiest airports in the United States and was the seventh busiest in the world for aircraft movements, according to the Airports Council International. The ongoing Terminal Lobby Expansion project is a six-year-long project scheduled to be completed next year in an effort to accommodate more passengers.
Beyond the construction, Charlotte is improving the airport experience with its first Delta Sky Club lounge, which is expected to open by the end of 2024. And last month, the airport opened a new 600,000-square-foot overlook area complete with views over the airfield, an airport-themed playground, “informative exhibits” detailing aviation history in the Carolinas, and more.

No North American airline made the top twenty, with Delta narrowly missing out at 21. Other North American airlines that made the top 50 are Air Canada (29) and United Airlines (42). In fact, those three airlines are the only North American airlines to receive any Airline Awards.
