It's not even the holiday travel season, and airline passengers are being asked to pack extra patience.
The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport recently published an advisory to passengers traveling to or from Austin to arrive early and expect a record volume of passengers in the coming days. The city will be hosting two major sporting events during the upcoming weekend, including both the Formula 1 race, as well as an SEC football game between home team The University of Texas at Austin and the University of Georgia
«As October is notably a lively travel month for Austin, AUS asks passengers to plan for record-breaking busy days at the airport,» the airport shared in an advisory to passengers.
The airport reports that Thursday, October 17 through Tuesday, October 22 will be the busiest travel days, as the SEC football game takes place on Saturday, and the Formula 1 race takes place on Sunday.
The airport projects that at least 30,000 passengers will depart on high-traffic days.
In an effort to streamline potential congestion and delays, the airport asks passengers to arrive early for their flight, at least two and a half hours for domestic, and three hours for international. The airport also advises that highways and roads surrounding the airport will be busy with commuters who are visiting for the events.
The Austin Airport has been posting travel updates on their social media accounts.
Adding to potential delays and disruptions, the airport is undergoing an extensive construction update, including the closure of security checkpoint 3 through 2026.
Travelers can use Checkpoint 2 West, which includes eight security lanes for TSA PreCheck, CLEAR, and Priority Screening. Checkpoints 1 and 2 East will be open for general screening.
During previous weekends when multiple sports events happened in Austin, the airport experienced extreme delays and traffic jams.
For example, in 2022, passengers were forced to walk to the terminal along the highway due to traffic backup, according to social media posts.

As we approach the Skift Aviation Forum on November 12 in Dallas, Texas, this year’s agenda is brimming with discussions on what’s ahead for airlines as they adapt, leadership strategies and decisions, and what travelers want from this next era in air travel.
Since earning AAdvantage Executive Platinum status with American Airlines AAdvantage in 2016, I've continued to qualify for AAdvantage Platinum Pro or higher status with the program each year. After all, I enjoy selecting Main Cabin Extra seating at booking, believe American miles still hold excellent value, appreciate earning miles through Bask Bank and love having Oneworld Emerald status. I also occasionally get a complimentary upgrade when flying within North America, although these have dwindled in frequency over the years.
Delta Air Lines has announced that its newest premium lounge will be located at its Mountain West hub, where the carrier is boosting international service over the next year. Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is slated to receive a Delta One lounge, as confirmed by an airline spokesperson to T+L. While the exact opening date hasn’t been shared just yet, this marks the airline's fifth Delta One lounge in the country. A step above the existing network of Delta Sky Clubs, the Delta One lounges are exclusively available to long-haul business or first-class passengers.
“In Corpus Christi, it’s the beaches, then everything else,” my shuttle driver Angela shouted over the roar of the highway as we hurriedly made our way downtown. That might be the truest statement I’ve heard in some time. McGee, Whitecap, North Beach, Mustang Island State Park, Padre Island — Corpus Christi’s beache scene is iconic.
A last-minute trip to Europe is as romantic as it sounds. Not only is the spontaneity thrilling, but European countries lend themselves very well to travelers who appreciate local customs and enjoy exploring new places without a rigid itinerary. Often, impulsively turning down a cobblestoned street will lead you to an exceptional hole-in-the-wall wine bar, a short-notice boutique hotel booking will be the best place you’ve ever stayed, or a chance encounter with a local will lead to a life-long friendship. But come 2025, you will need to do a little planning before you cross the pond. Next year, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will come into effect. This rule will require visitors from visa-exempt countries to obtain a travel authorization before entering 30 European countries and this includes US travelers.
Last month, TPG reported on the growing number of travelers forced to pay a fine after unknowingly breaking a little-known Mexican customs rule that allows only one portable computing device per traveler. As per the regulation, a laptop and a tablet are both considered personal computing devices. (You can also bring up to two cellphones.)

"Oh man, it's my husky out there crying, sorry," a woman said as she stepped into Kemo Sabe, a luxury Western apparel store in Jackson, Wyoming. "I'm going to have to buy a hat in here. This is so cool."
