Luxury travelers aren’t afraid to spend a lot of money on a single trip, go off the beaten path, and seek out new challenges around the globe ― think safaris, expeditions, high elevations, and deep-sea dives. When considering a gift for the traveler who goes big, the best present might not be a plane ticket, a train pass, or a travel accessory at all.
Travelers’ insurance is the unsexy add-on to a well-planned itinerary. The fees are usually nominal and the perks are often mighty, but it’s never the focal point of the booking process. Yet for the luxury traveler whose globe-hopping pursuits are especially unpredictable, Allianz’s AllTrips Premier Plan is surprisingly useful.
Like most insurance plans, the AllTrips Premier Plan allows you to select the amount of trip cancellation coverage. The more coverage you get, the higher the premium. Unlike most plans, this plan allots the same amount of coverage for every trip for an entire year. For the cost of $485, for example, every trip is insured for up to $2,000. For $1,530, the coverage increases to $15,000. Trip cancellations and trip interruptions are both covered under the plan.
The Premier Plan also covers medical emergencies up to $50,000 and emergency medical transportation up to $500,000. Those figures might seem a bit overboard (no pun intended) but not in remote locations where the nearest hospital isn’t equipped to treat a serious medical event. In these situations, trip insurance spares the traveler the unpredictability of some potentially dangerous predicaments.
Imagine if a cruisegoer experiences a medical emergency aboard a ship. The closest port might not be in proximity to the best hospital. Allianz can fetch an air ambulance to transport them to Miami, or San Diego, or wherever the best domestic care is quickly accessible. Half a million dollars can afford transportation on a private flight with doctors and nurses aboard, which potentially means the difference between life and death. By having insurance cover the emergency transportation, the traveler is also saved from a major financial inconvenience long after the medical event has passed.
Some Premier Plan perks overlap with the typical member benefits associated with credit cards in a luxury traveler’s wallet (rental car damage, concierge services, etc.) but not always. Just like medical insurance, you never know when a particular benefit might come in handy. In the unlikely event of something especially fortunate ― say your traveler’s favorite band is playing a local concert on the same week of their trip ― the ability to fetch tickets at a moment’s notice could be an especially useful perk.
