The next big solar eclipse is just a month away, and car rental company Turo wants to help travelers see it in style.
The annular solar eclipse, which will cross over the United States on Oct. 14, will result in a brilliant halo effect with the moon obscuring most of the sun. The eclipse will first appear over Oregon, delighting viewers from about 8 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. local time before moving down over the Western and Southwestern U.S. and eventually crossing over into Texas.
To celebrate the rare event, Turo — essentially the Airbnb of cars — is teaming up with a local host in Austin, Texas, to rent 10 electric vehicles that day for just $14, the company shared with Travel + Leisure. The vehicles are available to book starting Sept. 14.
“The last time the U.S. witnessed a solar eclipse, hotels and car companies saw major spikes in bookings along the Path of Totality,” Turo Chief Data Officer Albert Mangahas told T+L. “As the first carbon-neutral certified car sharing platform with one of the largest selections of bookable electric vehicles, Turo’s Eclipse Viewing Party brings adventure and sustainability together in this once-in-a-lifetime guest experience.”
Turo said these specific EVs come with a pair of passes to the company’s own viewing party at Joshua Creek Ranch in Boerne, Texas, which sits on the path of totality and includes a Texas-style BBQ, lawn games, and more.
Travelers who want to book the special cars, which are indicated by a watermark on the listing photo, must be 21 years old or older.
Beyond Texas, space enthusiasts will be able to see the eclipse from several other states like California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. In fact, it will be visible from three out of Utah's five national parks: Bryce Canyon National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Capitol Reef National Park.
