New technology is here to help travelers get through the security process quickly. Starting as soon as January 2024, visitors to Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada, will have the chance to use the self-service screening option with more airports to come. Here’s who is eligible and what the process will look like.
The Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) is in charge of the department's research, development, testing, and evaluation of technology. S&T has developed the Screening at Speed Program, a passenger self-servicing screening option. Contracts were then given to three companies—Micro-X, Voxel Radar, and Vanderlande Industries Inc—to work with the Screening at Speed program to help develop prototypes and hardware that can be used for the screening process.
Screening at Speed Program Manager Dr. John Fortune stated, “Travelers will use passenger and carry-on screening systems at individual consoles or screening lanes themselves, reducing the number of pat downs and bag inspections [Transportations Security Officers (TSOs)] need to perform and freeing their time to be reallocated to the busier aspects of screening operations. The feedback we’ve already received during testing from both mock passengers and TSOs has been incredibly positive.”
Vanderlande’s Screening at Speed prototype (PAX MX2) is set to be used beginning in January 2024 at Las Vegas’s Harry Reid International Airport. Officers have been trained and will be available to assist fliers.
This program will allow TSA PreCheck (for now) travelers an opportunity to go through the security screening process with little to no assistance from TSOs. Travelers with PreCheck will scan their IDs. Then, a photo of the passenger will be taken. Biometric technology will then confirm the traveler’s identity along with their flight details.
There will be four stations for one checkpoint lane, each with a monitor with instructions and the ability to connect with a TSO if needed. Automated entry and exit doors are also part of the prototype. Doors will open once the passenger successfully passes their screening.
This prototype was also installed in March 2023 and tested at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Washington, D.C.
Voxel Radar’s prototype included passenger sensors sent in August, which allowed staff to test the products and better understand the system. The sensors may be added to the Micro-X prototype.
This month, the Micro-X prototype is beginning its test run of the project in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Their small CT X-ray system can collect images to help develop the system. In January, they will also give a virtual reality prototype walkthrough at the Consumer Electronics

A new pre-security sensory room at a New Jersey airport is aiming to make it easier for neurodiverse travelers, providing them with a space to wait for their flight as well as an easier way to get through security screening.
Jet2.com and Jet2holidays are on the countdown until their first flights depart from Liverpool John Lennon Airport, with operations starting in exactly three months The UK’s largest tour operator and third largest airline will start operating flights and holidays from Liverpool John Lennon Airport in exactly three months, with a flight to Tenerife signalling the start of operations from the airport. To mark the special occasion, Jet2.com and Jet2holidays have promised exciting plans at the airport for their first day.
In a tragic accident on Tuesday, a Japan Airlines plane and Japanese coast guard aircraft collided on the runway at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. The crash killed five coast guard crew members who were on their way to deliver aid to victims of a deadly earthquake that hit Western Japan on Monday.
The specific approach to reducing CO₂ emissions in the long-term horizon will be published next year in the decarbonisation plan, which is currently being supplemented with planned investment actions and operational measures.
According to the data of this year, passenger flows at Kaunas Airport are at a record high: it is expected that this year the airport will handle about 1.3 million passengers.
Jet2.com and Jet2holidays announced they would launch their award-winning flights and holidays from Liverpool John Lennon Airport back in May this year, marking the latest stage in their continued growth and success story.
“We regret to inform you that on the evening of January 2, JL516 was involved in a collision with a Japan Coast Guard aircraft during its landing at Haneda Airport, resulting in a fire on the runway. Our thoughts and prayers are with the deceased members of the Japan Coast Guard,” Japan Airlines wrote in a memo about a Tuesday evening runway collision that resulted in the Japan Airlines flight 516 erupting into flames.
Flights are again departing from Tokyo's Haneda Airport (HND) following a runway disaster that left at least five Japanese service members dead and two aircraft destroyed.
