If you’re never had Singaporean cuisine, but live in certain areas across North America, you can use a different kind of passport to try it.
The North American version of the 2023 Singapore Food Festival has introduced an electronic epicurean guide available now until September 15. This Digital Food Passport links to the festival’s 40 participating Singaporean restaurants and bars.
Diners first order a meal from one of these places. They need to take a picture of it to upload as well as information about themselves through a link on the festival website’s homepage. Then upon being brought to the Digital Food Passport’s landing page, users can enter a giveaway for the chance to win a trip to Singapore.
This festival is a campaign aiming to introduce diners to the diverse offerings of Singapore — to both inspire future travel to the nation and share the culinary influences of Singapore that are already available in their local community.
Singapore Tourism Board, Americas, Senior Vice President Rachel Loh defined Singaporean cuisine as a fusion of flavors and culinary traditions reflecting Singapore’s multicultural heritage and continuous innovation.
“It is a melting pot of Chinese, Malay, Indian, and other Southeast Asian influences, resulting in a vibrant and diverse array of dishes, blend of aromatic spices, bold flavors, and distinct ingredients,” said Loh. “Whether you're a fan of savory, spicy, sweet, or tangy, Singaporean cuisine has something to offer for every palate.”
According to Loh, Singaporean cuisine has risen in recognition in the United States thanks to the late Anthony Bourdain. The chef and travel writer and TV host featured Singapore’s dining scene in an episode during the tenth season of his hit series, “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.” In 2020, the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage recognized Singapore’s hawker food and culture.
Singapore’s cocktail scene is also growing rapidly through bars, mixologists and cocktail creations. Its gin industry is also emerging with Brass Lion Distillery and Tanglin Gin being Singapore’s leading brands.
In early 2023, New York City welcomed Urban Hawker, a hawker market-inspired venue by Singaporean food critic and guru K.F. Seetoh. The Midtown Manhattan food hall is also involved with the food festival, with participating vendors including Padi D’NYC, Mamak’s Corner, Smokin’ Joe, Jakarta Munch and Hainan Jones.
Along with Urban Hawker, New York City’s Singaporean or Singaporean-inspired establishments extend to Singapura, LAUT, Singlish, Kebaya, 53 and The Tyger.
“There are Singaporean restaurants opening up across the U.S., and we hope with initiatives like the Singapore Food Festival we continue to get the word out about how special

The South Carolina Aquarium, commonly referred to as the Charleston Aquarium because of its location, has the deepest aquarium in North America: the Great Ocean Tank. In this 385,000-gallon tank that is so tall it stretches from the first to the third floor, you’ll see sharks, a 220-pound loggerhead sea turtle, and many more fish, each more intriguing and beautiful than the next. But the aquarium is home to all sorts of animals beyond fish: a rehabilitated bald eagle named Liberty, a large pink spoonbill named Pearl, and adorable river otters. Need another reason for visiting? The aquarium hosts adult-only night visits where you can wonder the galleries with a canapé on one hand and glass of wine in the other.
