There are a handful of towns, sprinkled across the US, that celebrities love to hunker down in. There’s Montecito, the costal area around Santa Barbara, that counts Oprah and Prince William as neighbors. There’s Montana’s Gallatin county, where Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake supposedly savor the Big Sky along with Bill Gates. And then there’s Franklin, an apple-pickin’ Americana town just outside of Nashville. Among the white picket fences and wide brick porches, a number of celebrities, mostly with country music ties, call Franklin home including Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, and Tim McGraw.
Like most places that lure celebrities, Franklin has the trifecta of celebrity draw: naturally stunning, down home, and low-profile. Lots of beautiful land and lots of leeway make Franklin also attractive to people like Paul and Laura Mishkin, the founders of Southall, a new luxury farm just a turn off the country road of Carters Creek Pike. After years of building a legacy in Chicago’s finance scene, the couple thought a small farm, near their children and grandkids, would be a simple endeavor. Though like many “small projects” started by visionary builders in beautiful settings, Southall grew like a Tennessee beanstalk. Today, Southall is now a 325 acre luxury farm property with 62 guest rooms and suites and 16 distinct, hillside cottages amid a sprawling spa, a preservation kitchen, and a 10,000 square foot hydroponic greenhouse.
Southall has a lot in common with a particular kind of luxury properties I’ve stayed at. Similar to the Ranch at Rock Creek and NIHA Sumba that are also owned by individual visionaries who don’t need to answer to corporate bottom lines or timeframes, every horse hair of a detail was considered during Southall’s eight plus years in the making. This detail is first expressed in the pantry of people Paul and Laura called in to make Southall so special.
There’s Pollination Program Manager, Jay Williams, who oversees the six million bees and seven apiaries across Southall. Jay gives tours and runs the popular “Honey Harvest Party” that allow folks to slice through honeycomb and taste the varieties of
