Southwest Airlines is committed to providing travelers a positive, money-friendly, and safe experience. Travelers can check up to two free checked bags and choose their seating. The airline is also being praised for its policy for customers of size.
Southwest Airlines has had a policy for customers of size for 30 years. Customers can determine if they need this policy by using the armrest as a gauge, which provides a boundary between seats. Southwest states, “If you’re unable to lower both armrests and/or encroach upon any portion of a seat next to you, you need a second seat.”
Customers of size who infringe on the seats next to them can purchase extra seats before traveling to ensure that the seat is available. The width of seats in the standard economy class is 17.5 inches. The MAX 8 aircraft also has a standard seat width of 17.8 inches. Boeing 737-800 standard seats are a bit smaller, with 17-inch wide seats.
Customers who purchase the extra seats in advance can contact Southwest and ask for a refund of the cost of the extra seat. By buying the seat in advance, Southwest can ensure that the seat goes to the customer. Customers can contact Southwest via email at Southwest.com/feedback or via telephone at 1-800-435-9792. Southwest also states that even if a flight is oversold, they will still refund the extra seat.
However, if purchasing another seat in advance is not feasible, Southwest states that customers can speak with a Customer Service Agent at the gate. Agents can accommodate travelers with a complimentary additional seat if it’s determined that it is needed.
