Southwest Airlines has just announced that it’s charting a bold new course towards environmental sustainability. Its newly unveiled strategy, called ‘Nonstop to Net Zero’, maps out the airline's trajectory toward its goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, underscoring its commitment to a greener future for air travel. Embracing a more holistic approach toward sustainability efforts, the carrier is targeting carbon emissions, waste reduction and collaboration as strategic pillars that to guide its ongoing climate protection actions.

"We're working toward our decarbonization goals by modernizing our fleet with more fuel-efficient aircraft and securing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), while also furthering our sustainability initiatives in the near-term," said Helen Giles, Managing Director of Environmental Sustainability at Southwest Airlines. "Our People and Customers care about our Planet, and we continue to take action to address aviation's impact on the environment, while collaborating with our suppliers, local and national government, and other organizations."
At the same time, Southwest is also enhancing its recycling efforts by targeting five key focus areas and partnering with suppliers to improve its environmental stewardship efforts, including utilizing a leading sustainability ratings and intelligence solution, EcoVadis, to assess the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance of its supply chain and monitor compliance with Southwest's Supplier Code of Conduct.
Southwest's new goals align seamlessly with its existing sustainability strategy, which includes plans to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, reduce carbon emissions intensity by 50 percent by 2035, replacing 10 percent of total jet fuel consumption with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2030 and reducing energy utilization index at the carrier’s Dallas corporate headquarters by 50 percent by 2035.

"As we look ahead to the next phase of our sustainability journey as part of our Nonstop to Net Zero strategy, we're also proud of the progress we've made over the past year," Giles said.
In October 2023, Southwest signed a 20-year agreement to purchase up to 680 million gallons of neat SAF from USA BioEnergy, LLC.
